I’m actively TTC and was talking baby names with my sister last night and gave her my list of top girls and boys names.

It’s funny because I always said I’d never tell anyone my names until it was finally decided and baby was here and named as people always give you their opinion if you tell them before but most people won’t say anything if you tell them once baby is here and named.

So very high on my list for a girl is the name India and I would call her Indie for short. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and there will be people who just don’t like the name I expected that.

My sister however said but what if she gets comments about racism?? I was floored and have absolutely no idea where she’s going with this.... thoughts please?

In my ignorance, I'd never really considered the history when thinking about the name until recently, though I have heard it discussed several times now over the past year (IRL, not mumsnet) so if you're going to call her Indie anyway I'd probably go with Indigo.

BabyLlamaZen · 31/08/2020 13:57

If you'd been there a zillion times or lived there and loved it then OK. Otherwise it's like you see it as some exotic beautiful name which is a bit patronising to real people from there.

BabyLlamaZen · 31/08/2020 13:55

Would you feel weird telling an Indian person you'd named your child India? It used to be quite normal but people are much more aware of how this can look these days. I think you should have a connection or reason to India, or it can sound a bit ignorant. Like you're just pulling a country out the air which you have no understanding of; especially if you're a race which has been dominant over Indian people.

Viviennemary · 30/08/2020 22:38

I don't think it's a great idea tbh

Tillygetsit · 30/08/2020 22:36

I personally wouldn't do it. KH is enough to put me off.

theresaplaceforus · 30/08/2020 22:23

I don’t see why she would get racist comments. I think India is a beautiful name. My friend has a daughter called India who is 4, she goes by Indie mainly.
I also know of an Indigo and an Indiana so a couple of other options if you decided against India.

daisypond · 30/08/2020 21:33

As indicated by the number of those who think India is a super name for a white British child with no links to India, people actually don’t seem to realise the connotations. Others will think, at worst, the parents are a colonial/racist type or, at best, an ignorant/uneducated type. Neither is great, frankly. The one India I know changed her name when she was about 13. People can call their DC what they want, but the child has to live with it.

LairTai · 30/08/2020 19:35

Gosh this is MN at it's finest. There is always a small number of those who feel it is necessary to impart all their 'knowledge' and 'educate' the ignorant.
I was being facetious.

daisypond · 30/08/2020 18:05

@LairTai

If that happens and the name of the country changes then there certainly won't be a problem with calling your daughter India.

It's a lovely name.

It will be even more of a problem. Because then there’s no excuse.
M0mmyneedswine · 30/08/2020 17:30

If you like indie then maybe indiana as full name instead?

poppydaisies · 30/08/2020 17:26

India is controversial as the name of a British child since Britain committed so many atrocities there

This

@GirlCalledJames

India is controversial as the name of a British child since Britain committed so many atrocities there. Of course it’s not controversial as a country name.
Well, it actually is controversial as a country name as well. There’s a movement to change its name officially to Bharat or Hindustan by those trying to free the country from the legacy of its colonial past.
Fromthebirdsnest · 30/08/2020 15:57

India is a lovely name how silly ! I know lots of India’s nobody has anything negative to say it IS very popular though although I have a jack and the popularity never bothered me I love his name x hope you get your good news soon :) x

@Awwlookatmybabyspider I very rarely comment on other people’s posts who aren’t OPs, however I can’t help myself with your comment - TTC for people like the OP (and anyone else for that matter) can be a very isolating and stressful time. Sharing that journey with those who care about you relieves a lot of the pressure and heartache that it can bring. It’s comments like this that keep some women from talking about an incredibly important journey and issue that they should have every right to discuss in the open without fear of judgement.

@Waiting2BAMummy keep wishing and hypothesising if that is what helps you in this journey. Wishing you all the luck in the world 💐

Waiting2BAMummy · 30/08/2020 15:34

I didn’t change my mind exactly @NameChange30 but it came up in conversation and I opened my mouth before engaging my brain.

Lesson learned.

Very sensible, why did you change your mind?

Just stop discussing names with your sister. It's a fun topic but not so fun if people are critical about your favourites!

Waiting2BAMummy · 30/08/2020 15:23

Thanks @LairTai

telling your sister isn't an odd thing.
Weird to come on a baby name board and judge others for discussing ttc with their family

Surely if India was such a controversial word the country would have renamed it. I like the name Georgia but that is probably also seen as controversial, and Victoria now surely that is the height of colonism

Waiting2BAMummy · 30/08/2020 14:58

I didn’t at first @Awwlookatmybabyspider but have been trying now for almost two years and am needing some interventions so yes I have shared with my sister for moral support if that’s ok with you?!

OP posts:
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/08/2020 14:51

I'm more amazed at the fact that you're telling everyone you're TTC. Is that common place. Is nothing private anymore. Maybe I'm an odd ball, though.

villamariavintrapp · 30/08/2020 14:02

Yeh it's the colonial connotations that are off putting, some people would find it offensive (assuming you're white british I suppose?) And I think it makes people who would use it seem quite ignorant unfortunately because of that.. sorry.

GirlCalledJames · 30/08/2020 13:59

It might not be widely considered offensive now (although some people dislike the associations and I find it too colonial personally) but a child born today has a good chance of living for 100 years. The minority who find the name offensive could easily become the majority in 10–20 years. For this reason I wouldn’t use it. The fact that Katie Hopkins has used it would make me worry more, to be honest.
