I'm sure these baby name threads are wind up posts - they post a ridiculous name asking for opinions and then never hear from them again

fruitpastille · 04/09/2020 07:05

@Goodoldfashionedploverboy I live that book. It's so nice when someone else knows about it as usually everyone thinks of the Disney version.
I love the name Sirius but I wouldn't use it for a baby.

As a middle name? Go for it. Not sure as a first name - what happens if your dc hates Harry Potter?*

Your dc WILL hate Harry Potter if you lumber him with Sirius for a name.

Ellmau · 04/09/2020 06:19

Another fictional reference is Diana Wynne Jones, Dogsbody.

The anthropomorphic persona of the star Sirius is, after being betrayed by his Companion, born on earth into the body of a puppy.

len1234 · 04/09/2020 04:08

How about Silas?

EriAndo · 04/09/2020 01:49
Confused Oh dear, why would you name a baby this? He would hate it when he’s older! As a potter nerd, go for the normal names: Harry James Dean Seamus Oliver Cormac Rufus Tom Arthur Charlie George Blaise
howlathebees · 29/08/2020 16:08

I prefer Remus

Goodoldfashionedploverboy · 29/08/2020 16:07

Sirius is the name of the Dog Star (hence JKR giving her character the animagus she did).

I grew up in the 1970s before HP was thought of. Dodie Smith's sequel to 101 Dalmations, the Starlight Barking, concerns the Dog Star, Sirius, becoming lonely and wanting to recall all dogs to the heavens for company. He puts all the humans to sleep so that he can appeal to the canine population of Earth! Pongo and Missus's offspring have to sort it out.

So an entirely different children's book reference.

It's a lovely name in and of itself. I have always loved it. (I may have used it for a much-loved, now late doggo.)

HumbleCrumble · 29/08/2020 11:04

I love Harry Potter but your child will be a person in their own right, not a way for you to advertise what your favourite book is.

Horehound · 29/08/2020 10:47

No

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 29/08/2020 10:46

Wasn't Ginny short for Ginevra?

Yep.

ThatBitch · 29/08/2020 10:45

My dc wanted to call our pup Sirius. I didn't allow it because of the 'Hey Siri' thing.

TeenPlusTwenties · 29/08/2020 10:33

maths You could well be right.

mathsmonster · 28/08/2020 22:55

@TeenPlusTwenties

Harry James or Lily Hermione or Virginia Margaret or Neville Ronald

Middle name lee?
Plus Sirius is such a horrible character. He's a massive bully. Why name your kid after such an awful character. Choose someone who was actually a good person. Dobby?

TheFoz · 28/08/2020 20:32

@tinlovescan

If you want a star name maybe Orion would be nicer.
Perfect if you want your child called Onion.
SoupDragon · 28/08/2020 17:22

I actually like it as a name but it would be a no for all the reasons mentioned.

Like a PP, I also have a cat called Sirius.

tinlovescan · 28/08/2020 17:18

I should add I wanted a star name and jokingly suggested Sirius to DH who liked it and needed talking down.
He's not seen or read Potter.

I was also going to post about the fb group ‘children are not billboards for your fandoms’.

Maybe you should join OP.

biscuitcakes · 28/08/2020 15:36

Your worries are valid!!! NO
Middle name yes!

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/08/2020 15:31
@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito and after all that he was still an amazing person.
I dunno. He was a right dick as a teen; he was clearly the main tormentor of Snape, even to the point of sending him down the tunnel to encounter a transformed Remus Lupin, which could have ended tragically if James Potter hadn't intervened. He was incredibly reckless with Harry, encouraging him into situations & actions that really weren't appropriate / safe for a teenager because he wanted to be part of the action again - as Hermione observed, he'd been lonely for a long time, and saw Harry as a replacement James.

sqirrelfriends · 28/08/2020 15:16

I really like celestial names, unfortunately Harry Potter ruined many for me.

letsgomaths · 28/08/2020 15:15

@Janaih That should be “Sirius on a bike”, the famous flying 🏍. And I agree with @FAQs about “hey Siri”. An Oliver I know told me he had a lot of “Oliver Twist” in the playground.

tiredanddangerous · 28/08/2020 15:14

I think it's too obviously Harry Potter, sorry. Plus it really does sound like serious.
