Mary or Lauren

Which one do you like the most? I'm expecting number three - we have a Ben and a Hannah. Another boy will be Sam(uel) but we can't agree on a girl's name. Lauren and Mary are our current favourites but also like Catherine/Kate/Katie and Sophie.

Lauren Sophie

Kote · 26/08/2020 07:18

I like Lauren and Katie, they both go well with your other DC names. Not so keen on Mary.

daisypond · 26/08/2020 07:11

Mary by far.

mintich · 26/08/2020 06:55

Lauren or Kate

jcurve · 26/08/2020 06:28

I like Lauren or Katherine. I tend to assume anyone calling their baby Mary these days is deeply religious.

sunrainwind · 26/08/2020 06:23

Thanks all. Though very mixed opinions! We don't mind popular or not so popular, we like traditional names that are easy to spell as our surname is unusual and always needs spelling.

I think we are now between Mary, Sophie and Lauren. I really like Catherine/Kate still but my husband prefers the others. His favourite is Sophie.

We might wait until the baby arrives but with the others we announced their names immediately and I don't really get the sense that you can decide more by looking at them so think we'd be just delaying the decision! But if it's a boy it will be ok! Boys were easier to decide!

My name is Lauren so that gets my vote Grin

Bowerbird5 · 26/08/2020 00:06

I wouldn’t use Mairi or Mhairi unless you are Scottish. My sister has to spell it a lot as she has Mhairi as her second name to another Scottish name. My dad was Scottish.

Very few Mary’s at School. I think I have only come across one that went to school with my children.
Only known two Lauren’s and they were both lovely. I think either go well. We have a Sophie in the family but it has become very popular.
Have you thought about Catriona?

RoseMartha · 26/08/2020 00:00

I like them in this order
Mary
Kate
Katie
Sophie
Lauren

greybuttons11 · 25/08/2020 23:59

Mary reminds me of an older woman

SionnachRua · 25/08/2020 23:59

Mary is a great name. Simple, travels well, well known but not too common in her age range.

I can't stand Sophie, it's wishy washy and overused. Lauren is nice tbf but Mary is better. Catherine is ok but meh.

sunyla · 25/08/2020 23:56

Mary or Sophie, however I do like Lauren as well! Catherine sounds a bit outdated and I really don't like Katie.

DramaAlpaca · 25/08/2020 23:55

I like Mary. It's due a revival I reckon.

tazzyb · 25/08/2020 23:50

I have a Lauren, it's a lovely name.
Mary is a very dated name, I've never liked it.

Tillygetsit · 25/08/2020 23:31

I love the name Mary. Pretty and gentle to my ears. Ive got a Joseph though so...

Imissmoominmama · 25/08/2020 22:58

Mary sounds stout and sensible to my ears. Sophie would be my preference from your list.

AllsortsofAwkward · 25/08/2020 22:53

Sophie but I have a Sophie timeless name

Lindy2 · 25/08/2020 22:48

I love the name Lauren. (My DD is a Lauren). Sophie has always been a name I like too.

Mary and Kate are ok. They are all nice names. I'm not keen on Katherine/Catherine though. I much prefer Kate or Katie although I would always have the full proper name on the birth certificate.

Foxes157 · 25/08/2020 22:47

You have a similar taste to me.some of your choices are my dc names. Definitely not Lauren, I've never met a nice one.

I'd go Sophie or Katie to go with your dc names.

CormoranStrike · 25/08/2020 22:30

Lauren - far out in front ahead of the others.

Mary is very dated to my ears. But Mairi or Mhairi would work.

Mymycherrypie · 25/08/2020 22:29

Because Lauren has been popular a while, people have known Lauren’s and are choosing based on those people rather than the name. Not so many people will have been at school with Marys.

I love Lauren, I like names ending in N.

SanJunipero · 25/08/2020 22:28

Lauren sounds a little dated to me. I love Mary, though - it's strong and timeless. If I'd had a girl she'd have been Mary.

FreshfieldsGal · 25/08/2020 22:26

Mary.
Strong, classic name. Timeless.

853ax · 25/08/2020 22:25

Mary
I think it is a lovely name had on girl list.

Graymare · 25/08/2020 22:25

Mary or Catherine, don't really like Lauren.
