Found out we are having a little girl, really struggling to love any names but mentioned India yesterday and other half likes it too. Rare for us to agree! He's worried our family won't like it though. Obviously it's not up to them anyway but what do you think of the name?

Here's our shortlist:
India Grace
Seren Grace
Evie Grace

Thanks everyone. We've gone for a completely different name now 😊 Cadi - means beloved in Welsh

Quite like India.
Evie and grace are very overused right now.
India Claire?
Or Evelyn rather than Evie?
I only know one India, she's white.

Flymetothestars · 28/08/2020 09:24

India is my favourite
Second choice Evie

AriesTheRam · 28/08/2020 09:04

India Seren

DidoAtTheLido · 28/08/2020 08:57

Indigo?

I like Seren.

Quire · 28/08/2020 05:31

@cheekaa

India was born on 15 th August 1947
As an independent republic yes, but the British East India company weren’t time-travelling forward from the late eighteenth century.

I think using a country‘s name for a child is bizarre, and yes, entitled and neo-colonial. If you wouldn’t call your child Nigeria, Serbia or Russia, don’t call her India.

sunyla · 28/08/2020 05:23

India is beautiful! I do prefer Indie or Indiana though. I also like Evie but it has become so popular. Not a fan of Seren, sorry.

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 28/08/2020 01:53

India Jane
India Rose are both lovely
Dont worry about what others think.

namenerd · 28/08/2020 01:41

India Grace is gorgeous !! 😍

DragonPie · 24/08/2020 19:51

I love India.

But Grace and Evie are massively overused at the moment. It’s the go to name that every girl has, dull dull. Grace as a middle name is the Louise of the 80s.

BinkyBoinky · 24/08/2020 11:25

@PaulinePetrovaPosey

India Knight is half Indian *@BinkyBoinky* . I think she changed it to reflect her heritage.

I don't love it. All the India's I know in my generation (mid 30s) are a bit Sloaney and pronounce it Ind-yaaaah. I think their parents went on too many gap years.

Ahh - I didn't know that, thanks
Magicbabywaves · 24/08/2020 07:43

Not keen on any of those. Whether the name India was a person’s name before a country’s, how many people actually know that?

HairyToity · 24/08/2020 07:39

I love the name India. The India I know is mixed race Indian and English.

My favourite on your list is the name Seren though. Beautiful name.

sibbys · 24/08/2020 07:37

I actually really like the name India. It's pretty. But I can't put it on my name list as I have never been there. What if I hate India when and if I ever visit?! If you have been to India and love it or have a lovely story (maybe you met your husband there) it's a good choice.

Evie I like - but I would go for Ivy instead. I know that's a different name but I think it's prettier Daffodil

CasuallyMasculine · 24/08/2020 07:37

Can’t shake the connection with India Willoughby, sorry.

But if you like it, use it.

FightMilkTM · 24/08/2020 07:36

India is getting very popular amongst people I know (they must all be colonisers Grin) which would put me off personally.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 24/08/2020 07:31

Always thought India was such a pretty name. In 15 years only ever taught 1 and she was lovely.

cheekaa · 24/08/2020 03:56

Crazy8 · 24/08/2020 03:45

@cheekaa

I love the name India. I personally do not know anyone called India who is an Indian and I am Indian myself. The name India originates as a name earlier than the country. Reference: Gone with the wind has a female character by that name and if I am correct the book came out before India the country was born. IMHO, if you like the name go ahead and use it.
The book Gone with the wind was written in 1936. When was India born?
Jj2431 · 24/08/2020 03:08

India is dreadful
Evie is getting a bit chav
Seren is ok

PaulinePetrovaPosey · 23/08/2020 18:51

I agree, it's not an "Indian" name. I've only ever heard of white women called India (eg. India Knight).

It's an elegant, underused name. But not with Grace!

India Rose is nicer, but again Rose is another overused nn.

How about India Jade?

Footle · 23/08/2020 18:28

I know a Swedish woman named Britt. Is that all right?

daisypond · 23/08/2020 17:58

I disagree that you need to be Indian, it's common enough in this country that people won't be surprised she's Caucasian.
That’s not the point. Most people who use the name India will be Causasian - and that is precisely the problem with it. I doubt many people from India are likely to use it, but if they wanted to, that’s their choice, as it’s part of their culture.

Backtobasics5 · 23/08/2020 15:47

I like “Indiya” much prefer that spelling. It’s quite a popular name. I’m not sure about Grace though.
