Jesse.

Is it a marmite name? Any thoughts?

Love Jesse, go for it!

Firebird83 · 23/08/2020 23:43

New Testament boys names like Peter and Mark are dated, but Old Testament ones like Noah and Elijah are definitely ‘in’ at the moment!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 23/08/2020 23:00

Hate marmite, love Jesse. I wanted it for a boy but DH vetoed it straight away.

Tillygetsit · 23/08/2020 22:49

I have a 9 year old dn Jesse. He's never had any insults chucked at him by his peers...just some snide remarks from family out of his earshot Hmm
I personally love it but then again Im a marmite fan.

NatalieH2220 · 23/08/2020 22:28

I really like it. No idea about the insult others have mentioned. Not something I've ever heard.

passthegin1234 · 23/08/2020 22:23

Thanks for excellent feedback everyone! It's given me lots of food for thought ( no pun intended!).

@ImaSababa

I've never been able to fathom why anyone would choose this name for a boy.
Jesse James (outlaw) is quite a manly role model!
Loveden · 23/08/2020 22:02

I loved it and thought about using it but northern family members (I am from London) immediately brought up the "big Jesse" thing. In the end I had a girl, so we never did get to use it.

@wowfudge

I've always thought that the majority of biblical names are classic rather than dated.
I think if they've had a rather noticeable surge in popularity and that has tailed off then they will feel dated for a while.
Kote · 23/08/2020 21:15

I've never heard of the insult (I'm 27). Love the name.

Jessie as short for Jessica, lovely. Jesse for a boy is just silly, sorry, just give him a normal boy's name.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 23/08/2020 20:32

@daisypond

I’m not keen. Biblical Old Testament boys’ names are hugely common and now dated in the U.K, even if this particular one isn’t. Jesse will make people think you are Breaking Bad fans.
I am very amused at the thought of two and a half thousand year old names only now becoming ‘dated’ Grin.
daisypond · 23/08/2020 11:29

I can’t believe people haven’t heard of big Jessie (ie) as an insult! I’m in the south east and know it.

Absolutelylush · 23/08/2020 11:29

Boy or girl?

I’ve heard big Jesse as an insult but I don’t think young people would know it.

I do like it but can see it would be hard for a boy depending on the kind of character they were.

Oneandabean · 23/08/2020 11:26

I know a 5 year old Jesse and it really suits him. I love the name. I don’t think it’s so associated with a girls name anymore as there’s hardly any Jessica’s about and I haven’t heard anyone say ‘you big jessie’ since I was a kid (now 30)

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 23/08/2020 10:47

Why not the name 'Marmite'?

Some people will love it and others... well I think you know. Wink

whatausername · 23/08/2020 10:26

There would definitely be big Jesse jokes from the older generation where I am. I don't know about those my own age, they would certainly know the phrase but I'm not sure they'd use it. I like it but absolutely couldn't use it. I'd hope he's a big strapping lad who takes stuff on the chin rather than a sensitive soul.

PlantPotting · 23/08/2020 10:19

Lovely name. Not overly popular at all but very much mainstream now as a boys name and won't raise any eyebrows compared to the other names about now.

EggysMom · 23/08/2020 10:12

I found a Jessie in our family tree last night - lady - early 1800s. Not a family name at all, but I guess in an era of a dozen children, you get a chance to pick some new names!

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2020 10:08

I know an adult Jesse and he says it's not an easy name to live with.

Jessie for a girl is fine, but the 'big jessie' association isn't good for a boy.

RuthW · 23/08/2020 10:02

Awful. Hate Jesse and Jessie.

AvoidingRealHumans · 23/08/2020 09:50

I know two little boys called Jesse and it really suits them, its a lovely name.
I've never heard of "big Jessie" either.

Nquartz · 23/08/2020 09:40

My immediate thought was an American cowboy type 🤷🏻‍♀️
