Brazil?

Thoughts on “Brazil” for a baby girl? No middle name, as Brazil in itself is kinda “out there” and uncommon, I think a middle name would be overkill. I hated it when my boyfriend mentioned it originally, but it’s actually grown on me. I know a ton of London’s, Asia’s, Ireland’s, etc.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Oh, come on. Are people really going to fall for this?

ktp100 · 22/08/2020 19:56

I know 2 Saffron's, beautiful name. Grey sounds nice too.

Brazil.....notsomuch.

Outwithreason · 22/08/2020 19:47

Vienna? Helena?

supersonicginandtonic · 22/08/2020 19:45

Poor kid! That's her screwed when applying for jobs. I don't think anybody would take Brazil seriously. Maybe if she wants to be a stripper or lap dancer she'd be ok.
Working in safeguarding most of my adult career I have heard some silly names but this has to be the worst. You even top Isis 🙈

Outwithreason · 22/08/2020 19:43

Dakota? Or would it be odd to be named after a state?

Bloomburger · 22/08/2020 19:43

Isn't Roma a kind of traveller/gypsy?

If you want something Italian how about Lucia?

Diverseduvet · 22/08/2020 19:42

Yeah, I guess LA is so creative she'll be in a class with 3 Brazil's and 2 Brasils

pineappletop · 22/08/2020 19:42

@XGOLDEN Adelaide is beautiful as well. I’ve always like that name.

I love it, there are lots of things they can choose to shorten it to as well. I always hated not being able to shorten my name

Burnthurst187 · 22/08/2020 19:40

Poor child

XGOLDEN · 22/08/2020 19:39

@pineappletop

If you are looking for place names

Adelaide
Florence
Paris

Unusual but not too awful names I've seen in school are

Bluebell
Storm
Odette
Peony
Liberty
Opel

@Outwithreason

You might be better using an American forum if you live in LA? Maybe Brazil doesn't have the same connotations there?
Yes, perhaps lol. I appreciate all the comments though!

However sorry OP I really think Brazil/Brasil is awful and if I was your child I'd resent you for it

mastertomsmum · 22/08/2020 19:38

Rio, Brazil boys names surely? Don’t think either is esp good whatever gender applied to.

@Diverseduvet

What a shame you think it's ok to saddle your child with an awful name because you live in LA. I do like Roma though
I wouldn’t be naming my child something simply because I live in a particular city, first of all. I like name and I she would most likely have it no matter where I lived... By being in LA she’s less likely to be an anomaly and there are tons of other children who also have parents who are creatives & think outside of the box. She won’t be surrounded by stuffy people who make fun of her name. And yes, Roma is quite beautiful.

@XGOLDEN

I’d also like to add that I live in Los Angeles, so, weird names run rampant here lol. I’m seeing some great suggestions/ alternatives though! Keep me coming!
So it's highly unlikely that Andrew or Elizabeth would be 1 of 12 in a class? Or even 1 of 2?

Topseyt · 22/08/2020 19:21

It’s a “no” from me, though I don’t like very “off the wall” names anyway.

However, if you are in the US then it seems these things are a lot more accepted. There was recently a US based poster who wanted to call her baby daughter Michigan Lyricism. She waxed lyrical (pun intended) about it and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t universally popular on here.

@Lelophants

Have you been there? If you want a beautiful country name maybe pick something like Roma (Rome) or Genoa or loads of beautiful Italian cities.
“Roma” is actually beautiful!! I like that!

Listen to 'A Boy Named Sue' by Johnny Cash...

Diverseduvet · 22/08/2020 19:17

I'd be amused if I heard a child with that name and just think 'try hard' yawn yawn. Giving your child a 'cool' name doesn't make them cool! In fact just the opposite. As a teacher the amount of children with out there names which just don't suit them, or that have problems which give them extra attention is massive.

CaptainCorellisPangolin · 22/08/2020 19:17

Look, this is almost certainly a windup but, on the off chance that some poor kid is actually going to end up being called Brazil, please don't do this. Please. You trying to be "zany" or "unique" does not help your child AT ALL. No one is going to think
"Ooh, Brazil! What cool and free thinking parents she must have!"
They're going to think
"Poor little sod, being used as a vanity project from day one."

EmmaJR1 · 22/08/2020 19:13

You sound like you've made up your mind OP.

At least give your child a middle name so she has choices in the future.
