Minnow?

I really like the sound of Minnow for a little girl. It seems really lovely and sweet on the tongue. I am aware it is a fish, but it doesn't seem that different to being named Willow (which is a tree), or even after a flower or another animal. I'm also aware I am technically naming a grown woman (if the baby is a girl) but I can actually see it being a very fitting name.

How do you like it? What would be your first thought if you met a little girl named Minnow?

@WorraLiberty

I'm also aware I am technically naming a grown woman (if the baby is a girl)

I can virtually guarantee you won't be, as by the time she's 18 she'll have changed it.

😂

Minnow is a tiny fish as well, not good for someone to be stuck with. Minnie is terrible too

What about Willow? That sounds very similar and is a popular name at the moment. Or other names ending in the same sound: Marlowe, Harlow, Cleo?

AriesTheRam · 18/08/2020 18:26

What about Willow or Minnie

2bazookas · 18/08/2020 18:24

Poor kid.

A lifetime of fishy nicknames, puns and insults.

Big teeth ..... "Shark"
Large or fat ........ "Whale"

FelicityPike · 18/08/2020 18:23

Jesus suffering...

mum2jakie · 18/08/2020 18:20

Piss take, surely?

pottop · 18/08/2020 18:18

Thank you for your responses! I still really like it though, but I'm not fond of the names where it would be suitable for a cute nickname or any of the alternatives. Might use it for a pet...

Our other girl's name is Madeleine. Smile

People are just making names up as they go nowdays.

celestebellman · 18/08/2020 18:14

No! Minna is nice though. What about Meadow?

Haffdonga · 18/08/2020 18:14

Minnows are known for being the smallest fish that get eaten and bullied by everyone else.

I don't think you've seriously thought this through.

RemyHadley · 18/08/2020 18:13

I’m sorry but no. It’s a fish. It’s not at all like naming a child after a type of bird or a tree. It’s closer to naming a child after a bug or insect.

nachthexe · 18/08/2020 18:12

Given the fish/ vagina connotations, calling a girl child Minnow is tantamount to abuse, however cutesy it sounds initially.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 18/08/2020 18:12

Nope. It’s not for me.

RedCatBlueCat · 18/08/2020 18:11

What about Minna or Imogen, affectionately called Minnow at home?
Just be careful tho. I know a 30 year old who was called Bubbles in-utero. He's still known as Bubbles to those who knew the family at that point in time.

Sexnotgender · 18/08/2020 18:08

No😂

riotlady · 18/08/2020 18:08

Have you been watching Cursed? There’s a girl who gets nicknamed Minnow in that.

But honestly, I wouldn’t.

JustGettingStarted · 18/08/2020 18:08

For a little girl, I guess it's sort of cute, but silly.

For a 30 year old woman (which I'm sure you hope she will someday be) it's awful.

DuvetCaterpillar · 18/08/2020 18:07

I don't think being the name of a fish is a problem necessarily (Wren gets a lot of love on here as a bird name). The problem might be that a minnow is a notoriously small fish, which might give connotations of being small, insignificant or unimportant, which wouldn't be very nice for a child. Manon? Mirren? Minnie?

netstaller · 18/08/2020 18:07

God no sounds horrendous that girl will be bullied as a teen with a name like that. Please don't.

Sunnydaysandsalad · 18/08/2020 18:06

Another name for bullies to carp on about...

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 18/08/2020 18:04

I prefer 🌈 Trout.

ChristianGreysAnatomy · 18/08/2020 18:02

It’s sweet for a nickname, but I wouldn’t use it as the actual name. Minna is a real name btw.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 18/08/2020 18:02

It’s a nice sound, but so is Salmon.
