Minnow?

I really like the sound of Minnow for a little girl. It seems really lovely and sweet on the tongue. I am aware it is a fish, but it doesn't seem that different to being named Willow (which is a tree), or even after a flower or another animal. I'm also aware I am technically naming a grown woman (if the baby is a girl) but I can actually see it being a very fitting name.

How do you like it? What would be your first thought if you met a little girl named Minnow?

Have you been watched Cursed by any chance. A girl on there gets the nickname minnow and I thought I was a really cute name too. unfortunately I couldn’t name my child after a fish. Too much bullying, especially as girls can be so bitchy.

whatausername · 18/08/2020 19:24

Definition one is a type of small fish. Definition two is "a small or insignificant person or organization".

Loveden · 18/08/2020 19:20

Recently I've become of the opinion that there's a troll (or three) on this board! Some of these names are just Grin
Minnow is a FISH ffs. A small, weedy, insignificant one at that.
Minna or Mina maybe. But not Minnow.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 18/08/2020 19:16

Please don't.

Bananalanacake · 18/08/2020 19:15

Almost as good as wanting to call a child Parsley.

MrsSpookyM · 18/08/2020 19:12

This is up there with Disney and Ballonz.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/08/2020 19:08

Minnow isn't just a fish, it's a mere tiddler.
Nickname for a small child if you must, but definitely not a given name.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 18/08/2020 19:04

There’s a Minnow in my DDs class! She’s 11.

Callybrid · 18/08/2020 19:03

What about Minka or Milla?

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 18/08/2020 19:00

Minnow? No no no.

There's Minette though? Call her Minnow as a strictly at home nickname.

howlathebees · 18/08/2020 18:57

No, minna or Minnie?

EarringsandLipstick · 18/08/2020 18:54

@AwkwardAsAllGetout

Unless you’re prepared to go all the way with a sibling set of Herring, Pike and little baby Stickleback

Brilliant 🤣🤣🤣

Honestly tho, what are people thinking sometimes? Imagine telling someone your child was called Minnow. A small fish 🙄

I know nothing about fish but for some reason a minnow brknsg to mind a boring little fish that doesn't really add much as such. Random i know. I love the sound of the name if it didn't have that connotation!

Lozz22 · 18/08/2020 18:50

Sounds like miaow!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 18/08/2020 18:47

No. Figuratively speaking a ‘minnow’ is so small as to be insignificant or lacking in power or influence. An awful connotation to saddle a child with.

Marmite27 · 18/08/2020 18:40

Its Moana’s nickname in the film

funnyonion1 · 18/08/2020 18:40

Please, no.

takemetomars · 18/08/2020 18:39

I like it!!

Monstermissy36 · 18/08/2020 18:37

Mena is a nicer alternative

Danglingmod · 18/08/2020 18:37

No, please don't. It's a word very commonly used to mean insignificant, unimportant, small fry, bottom of the pile. It's not just the fish meaning.

Willow, Mina, Margot, Willa all much, much nicer.

BiscuitLovers098124 · 18/08/2020 18:35

I literally see a fish. Makes me think no difference to tuna or salmon 🤦‍♀️

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2020 18:35

Dear lord, no. That has to be one of the worst suggestions for a name I've ever seen on here. Minnow! Just no. Poor kid.

AdaColeman · 18/08/2020 18:34

Elver if it’s a boy.

MenaiMna · 18/08/2020 18:34

Minou is 'kitten' in French so you might risk the pussy connotation. But it is also 'paradise' in Persian.
Like most unusual names think through all the worst possible nicknames and bullying and misunderstandings before you commit.
