Minnow?

I really like the sound of Minnow for a little girl. It seems really lovely and sweet on the tongue. I am aware it is a fish, but it doesn't seem that different to being named Willow (which is a tree), or even after a flower or another animal. I'm also aware I am technically naming a grown woman (if the baby is a girl) but I can actually see it being a very fitting name.

How do you like it? What would be your first thought if you met a little girl named Minnow?

@pottop what about Meadow? has a similar sound, but not so fishy.

FenellaMaxwell · 19/08/2020 10:42

Kipper?

Whatsyourflava · 19/08/2020 10:30

Madeline much nicer OP @pottop

loutypips · 19/08/2020 10:26

Actually I prefer Anchovy.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/08/2020 00:17

No. Please don't.

I get that it's not logical, bird names (Wren, Robin) are ok so fish should be too. But they really aren't.

As others have suggested, use it as a nickname if you really want but please don't saddle her with such an awful name for real.

sorryforswearing · 19/08/2020 00:10

Please don’t.

whatausername · 19/08/2020 00:08

I've a feeling there's been a minnow thread before.

Iggypoppie · 19/08/2020 00:05

What about Willow ?

DoTheMaccaroni · 19/08/2020 00:00

I’ve pondered on this and actually I really love it! Smile

WonderHike · 18/08/2020 23:58

Haddock for a boy, scampi for a girl.

Giraffey1 · 18/08/2020 23:55

No. Just no.

CorianderLord · 18/08/2020 23:55

There's a cafe near me called Minnow. It's a nice cafe.

WonderHike · 18/08/2020 23:52

Doesn’t minnow mean like runt? I wouldn’t go for it personally.

Emmie12345 · 18/08/2020 23:46

Aw this was my dd’s nickname !

Brokensunrise · 18/08/2020 23:44

Ugh I really hope this is a wind up. However nice the word sounds, you can’t name your daughter after fish, give your head a shake. It’s not the same as naming after a flower!

Firebird83 · 18/08/2020 23:42

I know a Minnia, that’s much nicer.

BikeTyson · 18/08/2020 23:11

As a pet name you call your child at home - fine.

As their actual, real life name that they’ll also have to use as an adult - yikes.

QueSera · 18/08/2020 23:07

Horrendous. No.

VenusClapTrap · 18/08/2020 22:57

My dc have a book about a little boy called Minnow.

ScubaSteven · 18/08/2020 22:17

Change your name to Minnow for a few days to test it out, then you'll have an answer!

Seriously. Why are so many parents determined to give their children ridiculous names that have to be either repeated or explained every time they use them? I feel that they should be getting pets rather than having children.

The rule of thumb is usually that if you have to ask...

Notajogger · 18/08/2020 22:04

Flipping heck. This may be one of the worst suggestions I've seen on here!

Just no.

SunshineCake · 18/08/2020 21:59

Hardly the same when Sturgeon is her surname Hmm.

VictoriousSockPuppet · 18/08/2020 21:56

It hasn't held back nicola sturgeon....

JaJaDingDong · 18/08/2020 21:47

If I ever have twins I'm going to call them Minnow and Willabelle.

Creamteafatty · 18/08/2020 21:02

Probably not I'm afraid.

How about:
Willow
Minerva
Minette
Harlow
Meadow
Winnie
