Thoughts on Meryl for a girl?

Obviously there’s Meryl Streep (not a bad association), and I’ve known one other Meryl who would be in her 20s or 30s now, so I always assumed it was a medium popular name. But searching for figures online it seems almost completely unused. Weird as I think it’s quite pretty. I wonder why it’s not come back with the recent old lady name resurgence?

Meryl is fine.

How about Merle?

Liking Marcie, rather than Meryl.

If you like it go for it! You’ll be shouting it upstairs and across parks for years Grin

I also like the name Meryn, which is still unusual but a bit more widely used than Meryl

Beryl and Sheryl are just so awful I'm so sorry
I agree @DrDetriment
Puts me off Meryl
Any others on the list OP

There's a League of Gentlemen running sketch (senior ladies running a charity shop) where the punchline is 'that Meryl!' so for that reason alone I'd avoid it - not sure that many people would be familiar though.

I like it!

I also like Mariel, from Muriel’s Wedding.

I've met both a female and a male Meryl. Female in her 40s and bloke in his early 60s.

Isn't there an Osmond too? Male.
It's just not a good name to say out loud.

DrDetriment · 16/08/2020 18:17

Not one I like I'm afraid. In the same camp as Beryl and Sheryl.

I’ve only known one Meryl I was at school with, so mid 50’s now. Apart from Meryl Streep that’s it.

I think it’s very now actually, I’d use it. One of those names people are looking for, a bit old fashioned, but it has a contemporary feel.

Meryl Streep's name is a nickname. Her given names are Mary Louise - Meryl is a mash-up of them.
