Petra?

I have a Juno and an Annie (Anoushka on the BC) and expecting another girl.

Really struggling!

DH has suggested Petra. And I think I like it.

But it feels very unusual, so interested to hear opinions.

What do you think??

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
lottiegarbanzo · 14/08/2020 07:10

The BP dog generation are not this child's peers, or even her parents' peers. They are her Grandparents' peers.

How young are you suggesting the OP is? I remember Petra the dog and I have a 7yo confused.

My focus is not on the age of the OP. It is on the age of those who remember Petra the BP dog. I am beyond my natural child-bearing years, watched BP from as soon as I was interested and I remember Shep and Goldie but not Petra.

Petra the dog died in 1977, having been on BP from 1962. To remember her, you'd need to be at least 45. More likely, given BP's target audience, you'be be anwhere between 49 and 70.

As far as I am aware, exceptional IVF cases notwithstanding, 49-70 is not a typical age for a pregnant woman but is a typical age range for a grandparent.

@DramaAlpaca

It will always be the Blue Peter dog to me.
Same here but I suppose that response will die out eventually.
Rio5555 · 14/08/2020 06:54

Dish.

Ok I know that’s petri but literally first thing to spring to mind

Wecandothis99 · 14/08/2020 06:25

I really don't like it but only because I picture a very stern Russian shotputtter. Each to their own tho

Blue Peter dog will always be the real Petra for me.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/08/2020 23:11

I have a good friend called Petra, I have always liked it, elegant .

123Dancewithme · 13/08/2020 23:09

I like it!

lottiegarbanzo · 13/08/2020 22:54

Perdita was a dog in 101 Dalmations!

Portia is the contrasting example in the 'mispronunciation', or at least 'not so nice in some accents' stakes. Imagine the cast of Eastenders shouting 'Pooorsha!'

mylittleavalon · 13/08/2020 22:51

I really like Petra. I know a Perdita too which I think is nice but people seem to dislike. Also Portia along the same lines.

lottiegarbanzo · 13/08/2020 22:50

The BP dog generation are not this child's peers, or even her parents' peers. They are her Grandparents' peers. Are they likely to go around making unkind comments about a child's name?

If you were proposing Goldie, I might say 'dog's name' but even then, it's a distant association, unconnected to her peers.

@Mochudhu

I'd be quite pleased to be named after the BP dog. Set me up with a lifelong love of GSDs. Indiana Jones was also named after a dog (George Lucas's Husky).
Ha! So, "we named the dog Indiana" is actually true?! Marvellous.

katy1213 · 13/08/2020 22:35

The Blue Peter dog. For a whole generation.

NameChangeForRealName · 13/08/2020 22:34

A real life Petra! 😁

You and your DH have great taste 😉

I'm yet to meet another one, but they definetly exist.

Onlywantabunfight · 13/08/2020 22:24

Oooh- @NameChangeForRealName

A real life Petra!

There's much more love for the name than I half expected. This is exciting!

I like it. I know one - she’s German. I didn’t realise it was quite a common German name.

NameChangeForRealName · 13/08/2020 22:21

This is my name 😁

I am 25 and rarely have the blue peter reference, I know it of course but I cant remember it ever being a problem. Most people pronounce it correct straight away and the odd time I have to spell it.

Sunbird24 · 13/08/2020 22:20

It’s nice, fits with your other names well, and gives a nod to the trend for -a names without being cutesy

Broomfondle · 13/08/2020 22:13

I like it and think it's a lovely addition to Juno and Anoushka

Orphlids · 13/08/2020 22:11

I love the name Petra. It has a very pleasing sharpness to it. I’d assume Petra would be intelligent, witty and interesting. Unusual yet established.

Onlywantabunfight · 13/08/2020 22:08

I don't think we can have an Anoushka and a Petrova!

I'm really warming to Petra. This is very helpful.

The BP dog doesn't worry me - I don't think my kids' generation or even their parents - will really know about that!

My dad favourite place and the name he wanted for me until my sister vetoed it.
Off to name change now

solarsystem · 13/08/2020 22:04

How about Petrina?

Fozzleyplum · 13/08/2020 22:02

I like it, but I like Peta even more.
