What are people's thoughts on the name Sylvie?

I know a 12 year old Sylvia, whose name is generally shortened to Sylvie at home and was called Sylvie all through primary school. She decided to start calling herself Sylvia when starting secondary as she thought it sounded more grown up.

Maybe have Sylvia on the Birth Certificate, just to give her the option.

MikeUniformMike · 17/08/2020 12:46

I think it's quite a middle aged or older woman's name in France.

LirBan · 17/08/2020 09:48

I really like it but my French friend wrinkled her nose up at it which I'll admit did turn me off it. Silly really as I do not live in France and haven't been there in the entire time since my DD was born.

MikeUniformMike · 17/08/2020 09:45

Silvana is quite nice. it's the 'ylv' bit I don't like.
Sylvia is horrible but Silvia is pretty.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 16/08/2020 20:33

@MikeUniformMike

If you wanted lots of options you could call her Sylvestra. The nn in USA is Sly.
Or Silvana? Could be Silvie or Annie for short.
Alwaysundecided · 16/08/2020 20:32

Prefer Sylvia nickname Sylvie.
Both gorgeous

See I would use Sylvia and nickname Sylvie - I like to give the child a lot of options

finallychangedmyusername · 14/08/2020 22:43

Lovely, and not fussy at all. Smile

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 14/08/2020 20:33

I'm going against the trend here, because to me it's more of a diminutive.

Sylvia or Silvia would be more to my taste & more grown up.

PoodleMoth · 14/08/2020 19:01

Really like it (really dislike Sylvia though!)

daisypond · 14/08/2020 15:30

I think “fairies with silvery wings” is precisely the reason why I don’t like it.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 14/08/2020 15:09

😊 lovely

AllPlayedOut · 14/08/2020 12:44

Sylvie is lovely. Much nicer than Sylvia.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 14/08/2020 12:39

I think it's nice.

I prefer Sylvia, but definitely get that it is more dated. I like it because of Sylvia Plath really, although not a happy namesake I suppose. My DH said no to Sylvia because his great aunt was called that, so he said it was always an older lady's name to him. I totally disagree, but hey ho!

Mogtheforgetfulmum · 14/08/2020 10:42

Thank you!! So glad so many people seem to like it as I wasn't sure. I don't know any Sylvie's and the only Sylvia I know is now in her 80s! I'm surprised so many people prefer Sylvia- which has made me consider it.

Like it. Preferable to Sylvia.

WithIcePlease · 14/08/2020 10:30

Beautiful
I was considering this for DD2 who is now 17
I don't think it's fussy at all

Motherofmonsters · 14/08/2020 10:27

I know two babies called Sylvie,

I like it but if you're looking for something unique I think it might be the new buzzy name

VenusClapTrap · 14/08/2020 10:24

Nice but prefer Sylvia.

worstwitch18 · 14/08/2020 00:44

I like it. I like Sylvia a bit more.

daisypond · 14/08/2020 00:43

I like it but I prefer Sylvia.

howlathebees · 14/08/2020 00:41

I love it

Whatsyourflava · 14/08/2020 00:40

Nice nams

CabernetSoWhat · 13/08/2020 22:51

Gorgeous, bright and tinkly sounding name. Makes me think of fairies with silvery wings.

Too short to be considered fussy.
