I have always loved the -ara sound / names for girls;

Cara, Lara, Mara, Tara, Zara...

I am leaning toward Zara, as my long-term love, but is the Royal connection too obvious? Someone said they thought it dated though I would rather say classy.

Such a big decision - any thoughts / preferences?

I don’t associate Zara with Royalty at all, but that is possibly because I had a Zara in my class at school in the 80s so for me it is on a par with Leanne, Kirsty, Samantha and Danielle, some of the other names in the class.
Lara on the other hand is one of my favourite names ever. Love it.

I have a Kara so I am biased.

I think Zara is lovely and don’t think the Royal connection is too strong at all. Especially not amongst children who likely will have no idea, unless the royal family is often discussed in the household.
