Me and DH recently discovered the name kitty and thought it could be an option for our DD. Any thoughts??

Unless you really like Catherine/Katherine, I wouldn't put it on the birth certificate just so you can nickname her Kitty. Kitty and Katherine have totally different vibes IMO, so if you like Kitty go with that.

I also don't think it's different in terms of being infantile to the increasingly popular "Frankie" "Georgie" 'Vinnie" lot. There are plenty of those about.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 14/08/2020 12:25

Not my taste really, but I have heard of a female Kit (Kit on the BC), which you could then make Kitty when she is little. Kit when she is older. Although, not to my taste, it isn't silly, infantile or feline.

I think if you can visualise yourself at the age you are now, introducing yourself to your new boss or something.

"Hi, I'm Kit" - perfectly fine! Kind of cool axt

"Hi, I'm Kitty" - for me it would be a bit embarrassing, like saying "hi I'm a cute little kitten" type thing..? Something I wouldn't like as a grown woman in a professional setting.

I like Catherine or Catriona better though personally. Or how about Christina or Kristina?

MinnieJackson · 14/08/2020 09:38

My uncle's mum was kitty and I only ever knew her as an old lady but it suited her beautifully. She was Catherine. A family member called their baby Eloise Kitty

zigaziga · 14/08/2020 08:47

I love Catherine (or Katherine) with Kitty as a nn.

Alwaysundecided · 14/08/2020 08:42

I love it. I think it's good enough to stand alone but I have to admit I discounted it personally because I worried about pussy jokes etc at school the fact it could be considered a bit infantile.
I wouldn't want to put a completely different name on the BC though I don't think.

LiBan · 14/08/2020 07:45

She may well hate you for not putting catherine on the bc.

Kitty is a bit fashionable now, but when she is 46 and trying to get back in to workplace she might be cursing you for giving her such a dated name.

Or even at 22 trying to be taken seriously.

It is not a name to decide on her behalf that she should have an infantile name forever.

Mine is just dated. Not cutesy. That is bad enough.

worstwitch18 · 14/08/2020 06:07

I like it as a nickname for Catherine/Katherine or a similar proper name.

DramaAlpaca · 12/08/2020 22:39

I think Kitty is very sweet, but it's too cutesy to be a standalone name and needs something more dignified (for want of a better word) on the birth certificate, Katherine for preference.

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/08/2020 21:03

Lovely name. And for goodness sake, put the name you are actually going to use on the birth certificate. If her name is Kitty, it’s not Katherine!

TurnUpTheHeat · 12/08/2020 20:45

Love it but it's a nn for Katharine/Catherine. Just as Lizzie is a nn for Elizabeth and Maggie/Meg/Peggy for Margaret. I could go on. Ned nn Edward, Kit nn Christopher, Mandy nn Amanda, Penny nn Penelope, Tony nn Anthony.

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 12/08/2020 20:38

Must be a*

WhereTheCrawdadsSing · 12/08/2020 20:37

I like it as a nickname / shortened version of Catherine or maybe Catriona? I think on its own on the BC, it's one of those names she may hate you for giving her. Sorry, it's just a bit silly as a full name. And I'm definitely not one of those people who insists there must longer name on BC and I do like different and nature inspired names. But kitty is a bit childish for an actual cat. Bit much to saddle a grown woman with it imo. Which is why I'd give her the option of Catherine.

TriSarahTops · 12/08/2020 20:04

It’s OK as long as neither the middle name or the surname is Hope. Kitty Hope sounds like a cat sanctuary yes, I know a child with this name.

nasiisthebest · 12/08/2020 19:41

Like it as a nickname.

Dogsgowoofwoof · 12/08/2020 18:57

Horrid, sounds childish. Also, to me it doesn’t sound like a proper name.

BeChuille · 12/08/2020 18:55

Too cutesy. Bit stripper.

Katherine is ok

ILoveStickers · 12/08/2020 18:54

I know one who is Caterina.

Twickerhun · 12/08/2020 18:54

Love it

Stinkyjellycat · 12/08/2020 18:53

Love it.

123Dancewithme · 12/08/2020 18:52

Love it!

PoodleMoth · 12/08/2020 18:47

Love it and would definitely put it like that on the birth certificate

AugustBreeze · 12/08/2020 18:45

Or Catharine.

danascully96 · 12/08/2020 18:23

Or Catherine! I like that spelling more than Katherine I think.

danascully96 · 12/08/2020 18:21

It is a bit twee and young sounding. I think giving a child options is best because perhaps she doesn’t want a pet name? I really like Kitty, but from my perspective, Katherine “Kitty” makes sense, just like Joshua “Josh” makes sense and it doesn’t seem unnecessary or unnatural to have a formal name.

MikeUniformMike · 12/08/2020 18:08

I'm another who wouldn't put something other than Kitty on the bc.
If it is good enough for Earl Spencer's daughter and Ms Dimbleby, why would she need a 'formal' name?
