Avi, by itself, male (meaning father).

As a shortened form , it can go either way, though there are more male names that shorten to it (Avinathan, Avishai...) than female (Avigail is the only one I know of that's used often) so I'd assume male at first but wouldn't be entirely surprised.

I wouldn't think of it for an animal, but I think it could work - maybe for a bird.

Like the pp though, I wouldn't balk if I met a girl called Avi either, but my first guess would be male and definitely human.

I only know of one who is male (human). So I would say it is a name for a boy / man.

I would assume male, as I've only known one Avi who was a teenage boy. I wouldn't blink if I was introduced to a female Avi, though, as it could be short for a few things, I imagine. Maybe even a name in it's own right.

(Avigail is a very very old Hebrew name, and where we get the name Abigail from!).

Its a jewish man's name.

The man I know with that name is not a nice man though - left his wife for someone less than half his age. Blond. Big tits.

So every time I hear it, I just think of him and the pain he caused.

I know two Avis, both Jewish, one male one female. Both pronounced to rhyme with savvy. The guy, it’s short for Avishai, not sure of her full name in the woman’s case.

Not sure. I think I have known one Avi Male and Jewish.
I wouldn’t be sure.
If pronounced A - vi as I. The letter A if be more likely to think it was a girl.
If Ah-vi. A boy.
But I wouldn’t be sure.
