Pretentious or not?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'd say it was probably pretentious, but it depends on the associations someone pins on it. It could be a collection of letters, an ancient Greek God (I love Greek mythology) or a parent living through their child.
I talked to a lady on the bus once with her little boy and she said there was another little boy in his class with the name Ulysses. She said they have to fulfil the name really.

To those of you that seem to think of this name as pretentious and some have gone as far as to say it's awful, why? Is it because it is foreign and somehow not white English? You do understand that it's a valid name from another country right?

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 05/08/2020 13:07

Just out of interest, is Phoebe pretentious? Rhea? Thea? Iris?

God forbid one of the parents might have read a book or two.

ivfdreaming · 05/08/2020 12:58

Awful and yes pretentious

sorryforswearing · 05/08/2020 12:51

I know an eight year old boy called Artemis.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 05/08/2020 12:48

Oh I absolutely love it.

The Artemis Fowl film has sunk without a trace (it got a lockdown release on Disney+ and won’t be released in cinemas) but the books are widely read and, annoyingly, Artemis Fowl is a boy.

I like the suggestion of Diana. If the lunar connection is important to you then I’d also add Selene or Selina.

Immigrantsong · 05/08/2020 12:44

Not pretentious at all. It's a lovely Greek name. Can't fathom why we would consider foreign names as pretentious.

Other lovely Greek names:
Athena
Aphrodite
Persephone
Daphne
Phoebe
Ariadne

cretelover · 05/08/2020 12:37

I know a baby Artemis. Lovely name lovely girl

Poppydaisies · 05/08/2020 12:02

In fact, what exactly does 'pretentious' mean? Pretending you're Greek?

Poppydaisies · 05/08/2020 11:58

I like it and know a lovely adult Artemis. I don't think it's any more 'pretentious' than all the other Greek names being used.

Chungus · 05/08/2020 11:57

'Fowl'

diplodocusinermine · 05/08/2020 11:56

Really like it but I think there's a film of Artemis Fowl due for release so that may cause issues....

CasuallyMasculine · 05/08/2020 11:56

If you like it, use it.

eandz13 · 05/08/2020 11:54

I absolutely love it but wouldn't be brave enough to use it.

Grufallosfriends · 05/08/2020 11:54

Why would an old Greek name like Artemis be any more 'pretentious' than say Penelope or Alexandra? Hmm

Marmite27 · 05/08/2020 11:44

Makes me think of Sherilynn Kenyon books.

Grufallosfriends · 05/08/2020 11:43

Beautiful name!

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 05/08/2020 11:41

Yep.
I know a couple of Artemesias. Albanian and Italian. Works there, sounds pretentious otherwise.

MikeUniformMike · 05/08/2020 11:40

Yes. Use Diana instead.

RainbowCookie7 · 05/08/2020 11:39

It's the name of a character in Ready Player One if that makes any difference to you.

VictoriousSockPuppet · 05/08/2020 11:37

Foul

HappyDinosaur · 05/08/2020 11:35

I don't think so, it's not try hard posh or anything, it's just a beautiful Greek name. I grew up knowing a lovely lady called Artemis, she was such a kind and gentle person.

BobbyTheVet · 05/08/2020 11:35

Yep. Sorry

Reluctantcavedweller · 05/08/2020 11:33

Yes, for a girl.

tillytoodles1 · 05/08/2020 11:32
