What names do you LOVE but would never use?

(And I don't mean you wouldn't use because there are close family members etc who have the name. I mean more that you absolutely love, but don't have the balls to use)

Mine is....

Demetrious.

I have known a few in my time and absolutely love the name, but not sure I could do it...

Alethea.

Absolutely love it but Aletheas I know have a lot of problems with people not knowing how to pronounce or spell it, or confusing it with Alicia (which, oddly, I hate).

River wren I love it 🥰 however I have a surname that wouldn’t work x

BraveBabyNames · 30/08/2020 15:22

Love this thread. I have a Lilith, Lucian and Persephone - now expecting DC4 so need another one! Contemplating whether or not we are brave enough to go for Coco Valentine this time....

Madeleine - me and DH both adore the name, but we’d feel a bit funny about using it :( daft, we know!

Also Ekaterina. I love that name but I don’t think a couple from Yorkshire could present a baby Ekaterina and not get more than a few odd looks.

Augusta
Hortensia
Primrose
Lucretia
Lavinia

Augustus
Horatio

And a bunch of others that would be appropriation or close to.

St John. Mainly because I only know the pronunciation (and the name itself) from Mad Men, so I would presume quite a few people wouldn't know it either, and also that character had a grim end. I do love it though.

Both if my DDS names have been mentioned here twice. Dd2 we almost called dd1 that name and didn't because it was too unusual, several years later when dd2 was born I still loved it so went for it.

We almost gave dd2 a second middle name of Melody, Aurora or Autumn and I regret not doing so now. I wish I'd given them both one of those as a middle name because I still love them and won't get to use them.

A name I love but wouldn't have used is Winter. A girl in dd1s gymnastics class was called it and I loved it so much, I was always a bit jealous of her mum for having had the guts to go for it.

For a boy I would have liked Loki, but what put me off was the fear he'd live up to the name and be a handful.

CharismaticVic · 28/08/2020 01:46
@clemmie22 Great to hear from an actual Clementine! Can I be nosey and ask your middle name? I'm really struggling for one that goes!
@Rainy88 sorry for the slow reply. My middle name is Amy but not quite so popular nowadays. I definitely think something short that's 1-2 syllables works well!

SleepingStandingUp · 18/08/2020 09:10

Lucifer is objectively a beautiful name

IJumpedAboardAPirateShip · 18/08/2020 04:22

Talisker

Dededa · 18/08/2020 03:36

@Littlebirdie123

Arbella because we've got Leeds accents and everyone would think we were saying R'Bella.
😂
Mumtobe193 · 18/08/2020 02:00

Nora - I absolutely love it! Think it’s so beautiful but I’ve been told by many it’s a bit grannyish.

In fact I think I think I probably would use it regardless of what people thought.
