Is Anna overused?

aprilfools19 · 26/07/2020 12:10

I’m not pregnant but Anna is in my top 5 girls names.
I just read another friend in which OP was asking opinions on Anna as well as 2 other names and quite a few comments said it’s overused.

I personally don’t know of any little Anna’s. I just asked my friend who’s a primary school teacher and there’s just one in her school. The reason I like it is because it’s obviously a well known name but it’s not too “unique” I’d never thought of it as a name where there’d be more than one in a class for example.

I just asked my children though and they said that they think Anna and Hannah are the most popular girls' names in years 10-13 with Sophie a very close third. So there are more Annas than I was aware of.

Chilldonaldchill · 27/02/2021 20:59

There are 4 in my dd's year at school (age 18). I also know a 16 year old and a 7 year old. I know more young Annabels than Annas though.

Mumtoananna · 27/02/2021 20:47

I have a daughter called Anna, she’s 12 and as far as I’m aware, there were none in her primary school and I’ve not heard of others in her high school (doesn’t mean there isn’t any 😄). She’s named after my Aunt who is in her 70s. I certainly don’t think it’s all that popular 🤷🏻‍♀️ No matter what name you chose, someone will always have an opinion on it. I think it’s quite sad that people have come on here to pass no other comment than the name is ‘bland and boring’. I would never dream of passing comment on a persons name choice but it takes all kinds I suppose xx

Smartiepants79 · 27/02/2021 20:43

I’ve never taught a single Anna in my 16 years.
The only Anna I know is 27.
It may be on the rise due to the Frozen connection.
It’s not my favourite but I wouldn’t say it’s overused.

TeaPiglet · 27/02/2021 20:40

I have a sister called Annalise which is similar but a bit rarer as an option?

BackforGood · 27/02/2021 20:33

I don't know why this thread ahs been revived, but it is interesting that, in July, I said I don't know any babies or young children called Anna, and since then, I know of 3 baby girls that have been born, and EACH of them is called Anna ! Grin

(I mean, I know that is anecdotal and not data, but...... )

noname55 · 27/02/2021 20:33

I love it. Never met an Anna. Only reason I wouldn't use it is because we know quite a few Hannahs and it sounds so similar.

VanillaAndOrange · 27/02/2021 17:37

I love it and I think it is neither overused nor underused. I worked in schools for nearly 20 years (until 2 years ago) and there were usually one or two Annas in a school at any one time, but never three in one class! And the same was true when I was at school myself 40-odd years ago.

RuthW · 24/02/2021 08:42

I know two.

One is 52 and the other is 7.

TurkishTealight · 23/02/2021 13:20

It is a little but so what? It's a great name. You could always use Anastasia or Annabel or Annamaria on BC to give her fancier frillier choice.

VenusClapTrap · 23/02/2021 08:49

Anna is beautiful. I don’t know any under 40.

babynamelover · 23/02/2021 08:48

I'm an Anna, never had any others at primary or secondary school but there were three when I was training to be a ece teacher.
There's one Anna at my daughter's school but I've never taught any myself in the last ten years.
My sister's called Katherine (Kate) I notice that's in your list.
Also my cousin is Hannah another lovely name.
I think it's a great name simple but pretty without being overly girly that's the vibe I get off your list I also like Anneliese and Anika.

Lillylola · 23/02/2021 07:33

Adriana is a good suggestion. Has both the names you like (Andrea and Anna) abs is not very used although well known name.

lobsteroll · 26/07/2020 23:37

I love the name Anna and don't think it's overused at all. I have a 4 and a 1 year old and don't know any Anna's under the age of 30.

If you like Alexandra and Andrea, what about Alexandria?

ButterflyOfFreedom · 26/07/2020 23:28

I know 3 Anna's - age 7, 10 & 45

I like it.
@ZoyaTheDestroyer thank you so much for taking the time to look those statistics up! You're my sort of person 😃 Always like to see the actual numbers
It is nice to find your nerdy tribe! Grin

Ulysses · 26/07/2020 21:37

We've got a 9 yo Anna. I know 3 others, one who must be 18 now, a 2 yo and DH's uncle's 2nd wife who is in her 50s possibly 60s.

I love how strong and classic it is without being staid or cutesy. YY to the pp who mentioned it's international appeal too.

Her middle name is Robyn too @MrsCalypsoGrant!

MrsCalypsoGrant · 26/07/2020 21:24

I have an almost 8 year old Anna & since we named her we have only met two RL Annas both aged around 20. I've encountered young girls called Annie, Annabel & Hannah, but no other Anna. I researched it & when we named her it had fallen from the top 20 to somewhere between 80-100 if memory serves.

I liked it as it's timeless & classic, not faddy like Ava & Olivia, not infantilising like Evie & Milly. I can imagine it suiting someone at age 3, 33, 53 & 83.

I'm biased obviously, but I think you have great taste OP Grin

I love the name Anna....i don't know any kids with that name in my area

polkadotpjs · 26/07/2020 19:47

I love it and only know one child and one adult Anna

123Dancewithme · 26/07/2020 19:36

Definitely not overused in England. It is popular in Ireland and Northern Ireland though, looking at the stats.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 26/07/2020 19:16

The only Anna's I know are 40-odd.

For little girls it's very underused imo

kathryn19801 · 26/07/2020 18:50

My cousin even called her baby Anna the same month mine was born. Still my favourite name though.

kathryn19801 · 26/07/2020 18:49

I'm in Northern Ireland. We must have a bubble of little Anna's! 🤣 I have taught numerous at secondary level and everytime I go to a play park we seem to meet one. Maybe I pick up on it more because I have an Anna so naturally tune in when I hear the name.
