Magnus?

Hi all,
We’re due number 3 in October (our second boy) and I’ve had the same smallish list of boys names each time I’ve been pregnant however, Magnus has popped up on my radar again and I’ve never really considered it a serious contender until now. I think it flows nicely with my other children’s names too which is a bonus!
Any thoughts on this name?

If we were to go for it, I can imagine we would shorten it to Gus (which I love).
Other options are Bruno, Otto or Rudy.

Seriously pickled? It's a normal Scottish name.
If anything it's currently seen as a bit hipster, so London nappy valley more than Eton.

And Magnus Carlsen is awesome!

jessstan2 · 24/07/2020 10:06

Magnus - quite good, strong, very Icelandic. He'll be a real geyser!

userabcname · 24/07/2020 10:05

I like it but love 0tto so I'd go for that.

pickledmybrain · 24/07/2020 10:03

Erm, honestly, if your other names are Gnaeus Pompeius, maybe.

And if he’ll be attending Eton or equivalent.

Otherwise, please don’t do it to the poor kid.

avocadotofu · 24/07/2020 10:02

I think that's a beautiful name!

BarbaraBeast · 24/07/2020 10:01

Thank you all for the replies so far-I’m glad it seems to be well received (more so than the other names on our list!).
The single drawback, which really isn’t the end of the world, is that my eldest son is Milo & I wouldn’t have usually used the same initial for siblings due to things like possible post mix ups etc when older (but as I say, it’s not the biggest issue). Do Milo and Magnus sound a bit twee?
Thanks again.

Love it!! It was in my top 3 but had to concede that it really didnt go with our surname. Go for it.

Orphlids · 24/07/2020 09:52

I have a Magnus, too. I’m so pleased we chose it, I love it a bit more every day. It is, in general, very well received. Many people say, “Ooh, that’s a good strong name!” And men in particular seem to like it. I get the impression they would quite like to be named Magnus themselves. We haven’t met another Magnus yet.

We also had Otto our list, as well as Rollo, Tristan and Uther.

Roseburn · 24/07/2020 09:45

ps: Short form of Magnus is Mansie, but we've never used it.

MagnusMama · 24/07/2020 09:42

Weirdly Otto and Rudy we're also on our long list. (But not Bruno, as we've a family friend named Bruno who is rather unhinged)

We also liked:
Duncan
Kester
Cosmo
Arlo
Milo

Roseburn · 24/07/2020 09:42

I have one too. He gets called Mag.

I like Bruno :)

Hiccupiscal · 24/07/2020 09:41

Like it better than your other options

Sexnotgender · 24/07/2020 09:41

Love it!

I’ll be honest I don’t like the other names on your list.

MagnusMama · 24/07/2020 09:40

Well I love it!
It suits mine down to the ground Smile

His nickname is Mags, sometimes Maggi.

VenusClapTrap · 24/07/2020 09:37

Love it. It was on my list.

dementedma · 24/07/2020 09:19
