Laurie for a boy??

Opinions on Laurie for a boy. I love the name but not a massive fan of Lawrence so it would have to be his name and not a nickname!

I love this name!

I so wish I had had a boy so I could have used it.

Beckyj93x · 29/07/2020 07:48

Personally I don't like it but it's every parents choice so if you like it go ahead x

Gummibares · 29/07/2020 07:46

Lawrence is a better spelling for a boy.

I know a female Laurence.

SwedishEdith · 29/07/2020 07:23

Lawrence is a family name on one side and I really like it. But as Lawrence. It's shortened to Larry for any American relatives. 'Laurie' is Susan Dey in the Partridge Family to me.

Laurence Fox, unfortunately, is a recent bad attention-seeking one.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 29/07/2020 05:49

I love it too. If I’d had another boy I was rooting for Lawrence (nn Lawrie). Slightly different spelling but same sounds.

DelphiniumBlue · 28/07/2020 23:53

I have an adult nephew Laurence, but in 10+ years of teaching have never come across one in primary schools. I know a few who are 50+, known as Loz or Larry, but never met a Laurie. It is quite cute though.

ThreeImaginaryBoys · 28/07/2020 23:45

My Dad is Laurie. Not short for anything. It's a great name!

willowtree81 · 28/07/2020 23:04

It's a brilliant name and I know a lovely 9 year old Laurie (not Lawrence).

LarkDescending · 28/07/2020 23:03

I love Laurie - and Laurence.

Boireannachlaidir · 28/07/2020 22:48

Love it! Laurie is a great name.

ButterflyRuns · 28/07/2020 22:24

Really like it!

MeMeMeYou · 28/07/2020 22:22

Cute! Really like it

Gummibares · 28/07/2020 22:18

Laurie looks and sounds feminine to me.

PoodleMoth · 28/07/2020 21:45

Really like it!

Richlyfruited · 24/07/2020 22:29

I have a Laurie - it's Laurence on his birth certificate. He is early teens now and loves being called Laurie - has never wanted to use his full name!

It's still uncommon but I now know a few smaller boys called Laurie so may be becoming more popular?

Stringsattached · 24/07/2020 22:17

I know a Laurie in his 50s. I’m not even sure if he is Laurence but he has always been known as Laurie.

foxtiger · 24/07/2020 21:47

I much prefer the spelling Laurence for a first name, but that's not much help to you if you don't like it. If you really want to go with just Laurie (which I have definitely seen for boys and the only female one I've ever met would probably be about 56 by now), then maybe you could use a more traditional, unambiguously masculine name as a middle name just in case he ever fancied a change.

@Poppydaisys

For a boy, Lawrence or Laurent are great names.

Laurence is the feminine form of Laurent. Like Florence is for Florent.

As mentioned upthread, Laurence has been used as a male name in England for the best part of two thousand years. Unless you are French or anticipate spending a lot of time in francophone countries I don't see why you would twist yourself in knots to fit with French naming conventions, which have their own quirks: Florence and Laurence are girls, but Maxence is a boy. Fabienne is a girl, but Etienne is a boy.

I wonder if there are parents on French name sites telling each other to avoid Laurence because it is a boys' name in anglophone countries. What would be so awful about giving a boy a very slightly feminine name?

DappledThings · 24/07/2020 10:34

I really like it, but only as short for Laurence.

TinyMetalBirds · 23/07/2020 22:48

Love it. Considered it for both of mine. I am normally really anti nickname names, but am mellowing in my old age and this is one of my favourites.

scrivette · 23/07/2020 22:44

I have a great Uncle called Laurie (Lawrence) Carr!
I like Laurie but would probably put Laurence on the birth certificate.

MissHoney85 · 23/07/2020 22:39

I'm an Infant teacher and have taught a couple of Lawrences over the last few years, both really lovely boys so I have positive associations. One of them is sometimes known as Larry.

Grandmi · 23/07/2020 20:47

I have a Laurence.Everyone calls him Laurie. He really likes his name and I love it . He is nearly 21 . Great name .

Scubalubs87 · 23/07/2020 18:13

I’ve always loved it ever since reading Little Women as a child. Husband vetoed it when naming our son.
