I was wondering if there were any good more masculine names for my DD like Billie, Wren, etc??

One of the coolest girls I have ever met was called Claude. DH vetoed it for our dds.

There are plenty of non frilly, strong sounding girls names that won’t make it seem like a rejection of her biological sex.

Indeed, lots of old-fashioned names that are not unisex but not trying too hard to sound girly either. More feminine names seem to be associated with an -ee or -ia or -a ending and likewise with real objects that are either gemstones, flowers, or "light" natural phenomena or concepts such as rain, spring, hope, love etc.

For me, giving a child a name that you more often associate with the opposite sex is something that will help a child stand out. I went to school with a male Kerry and Stacey (80's) and I thought they were so cool because their names bucked a trend. My son is dual nationality and has a N European first and surname and is always told how cool his name sounds, people remember him partly because of it.

Alex is fabulous name for a girl.

GarlicMcAtackney · 22/07/2020 15:20

Why did you spam the board with so many threads OP? You could have made one. Sabre Witch Man Surname 🙌

MikeUniformMike · 22/07/2020 15:20

DS is Samantha, DD1 is called Nigel and DD2 is Jeremiah.

AdaHopper · 22/07/2020 15:18
  • Sam (short for Samantha?)

@NameChange84 thank you! Finally someone gets it. It's totally sexist.

NameChange84 · 22/07/2020 14:57

I think it’s quite misogynistic to intentionally saddle a female child with a male name. It’s like you are encouraging them to be more masculine because being feminine or indeed female is unacceptable and inferior to being male and masculine.

There are plenty of non frilly, strong sounding girls names that won’t make it seem like a rejection of her biological sex.

Interesting that we never see any threads about calling a son Martha or Caitlin or Francesca etc.

TeetotalKoala · 22/07/2020 14:14

I know I Dylen (yes spelled like that), a Stevie and a Frankie.

Agree that you could use a masculine nickname so as suggested above but also Alexandra/Alex

Persephone/Percy

Rowan
Robyn
Robbie

MorbidMuch · 22/07/2020 14:08

What about names that can be shortened to masculine sounding nicknames? I'm drawing on some Blyton inspiration here:

Roberta nn Bobby
Georgina nn George
Wilhemina nn Bill
Francesca nn Frankie or Frank
Jacqueline nn Jack
Josephine nn Jo

Just thinking of different options!

OP posts:
user58 · 22/07/2020 12:57

@ElisaMay but in your other thread, you gave Lily-Rose as a possible name for your DD? That's about the least masculine name I can think of! Hmm

Ignoremeiaminvisible · 22/07/2020 12:47

Why not Charlotte then you can call her Charlie but she will have the option as she gets older to be called either

chunkyrun · 22/07/2020 12:43
