I was wondering if there were any good more masculine names for my DD like Billie, Wren, etc??

OP posts:

I have a masculine name..... hated hated hated it growing up, always asked what my “real” name is. They might sound nice but are not necessarily nice to live with

Taylor
Tyler
Phil/Philipa
Bobby, Bertie, rob, Betty?/roberta
Alex/Alexandra
Dylan
Cameron
Ollie/Olivia (maybe a bit of a stretch?)
Robin
George/Georgina
Kim/Kimberly - granted not many boys are rocking Kimberly, but can be unisex.
Kelsey (I know a man called Kelsey usually goes by Kel)
Leslie
Pat/Patricia.
Kelly (sometimes used for boys?)
Jamie
Jack/Jackie, jaqualine etc.
Teddy
Theo/theodora
Phoenix, river, fox, reign, (not my cup of tea, but can theoretically be for either- basically any kind of ‘earth’ name)

If you are going to go for a ‘boys name’ for your dd don’t forget she will be subjected to a lifetime of people thinking she male until they speak to her, or if she answers the phone ‘can I speak to ‘stevie’’ her ‘yeh that’s me’ ‘oh,’ blah blah blah. Same goes for when people ask her name and you respond stevie, you will always get a slight pause as people try to work out if she’s male (and has long hair) or if she’s a female. Personally I would have hated this for both myself and my child.

My name is Toni so pretty masculine and I hate it. 35 years old and I still hate it. I'm not into masculine names however here are a few

Billie
Robbie
Max
Stevie
Marlow
Ashton
Bailey
Taylor
Jesse
Dylan
Jamie

CloudyGladys · 22/07/2020 17:13

Avery - a girl's name but sounds quite masculine, like a mediaeval knight.
Blossom was originally a boy's name.

Drew
Skye
Jamie
Cameron
Camden
Stevie
Ashley
Kerry
Jordan
Laurie

Or pick a name like Charlotte, Bernadette or Samantha that has a unisex nickname.

heymammy · 22/07/2020 16:57

A few years ago we met a wee girl on holiday called Finlay and I loved it, it really suited her!

I also quite like Cameron and James for girls. Times are a changing and names will just be names in the next decade or so I reckon.

Alonelonelyloner · 22/07/2020 16:52

I second Dave. Also Derek shortened to Dezzer.

Billybob for that southern states twang.
Burt.

JaJaDingDong · 22/07/2020 16:49

Dave is a nice name

TinkersRucksack · 22/07/2020 16:42

I always wanted to use Alex if I ever had a baby (I didn't end up having any kids) as a One Name Suits All situation is ideal for lazy buggers like me

Ellmau · 22/07/2020 16:41

Or strong but feminine names:

Alexandra
Rosalind
Miranda
Victoria
Antonia
Claudia
Camilla
Damaris
Frederica
Sophia
Verena
Carla
Artemis
Juno
Cassandra
Elizabeth
Margaret
Anna

Ellmau · 22/07/2020 16:37

Jocelyn
Jordan
Meredith
Morgan
Ashley
Andree
Laurie
Julian
Darcy
Robin
Harley

MeadowHay · 22/07/2020 16:32

Robin spelled like this like the bird.
Repurposing something traditional like James or Jack (like Jack Monroe?).
Alex.
Athena? Not masculine per se but she was the Goddess of war not exactly feminine either.

averylongtimeago · 22/07/2020 16:29

Hmm, no longer keen on Sabre or Sabrina then?
Why do you want to give your daughter a boys name?

AragornsManlyStubble · 22/07/2020 16:27

I’m with you OP, I like masculine names ( or at least feminine versions of masculine names) and I don’t see an issue with it.

Not sure what I can suggest that’s solely masculine but my favourite feminine version of a name is Benjamina. I love Ben or Benji for a girl.

villamariavintrapp · 22/07/2020 16:04

Don't like the idea because it's sexist, but if you do then I'd pick a girls name with a more unisex nickname.

TinyMetalBirds · 22/07/2020 15:48

Am I the only one who doesn’t think Wren sounds particularly masculine? I suppose because I think of Jenny Wren.
