Just found out our twins are boys ... what do people think of Abel and Arlo?

We also have a grown up Isabel and lucy, plus a toddler called Otis.

Arlo is the cat from Bing. It's the first time I encountered the name and for me it's now forever a cat name unfortunately.

And Abel was the first ever murder victim- not a legacy I'd want to pass on to my kid, but if you don't much care about name associations then it'll be fine for you.

Personally, neither are my cup of tea.

GoshHashana · 22/07/2020 07:11

Arlo is the new Theo. Super common.

Abel is a very different kettle of fish. Very Old Testament.

ClashCityRocker · 21/07/2020 18:04

I'm not keen on Abel. It just makes me think of Able Seaman.

But both are perfectly fine, just personal taste.

My one caution would be to consider how much of a pain in the backside it can be if they're older and still living with you, having the same initial and last name, so no ones sure who the letter addressed to Mr A Last name is.

Although having said that, by the time they're old enough for this to be an issue letters will no doubt be a thing of the past.

DivGirl · 21/07/2020 17:44

I really dislike the name Arlo (it's one of Connie Hall's billions of kids names, and is just too popular right now meaning it'll date), but Arlo and Ezra sound lovely together.

Lizadork · 21/07/2020 17:18

I actually like Abel and Arlo - not keen on twins overly matching because it is important to also have own identity. Maybe use one of the names as a forename for twin #1 and the other name as a middle name for twin #2. That way can still use both without being so obviously matching. I do know a twin set call Hattie Mae Jane and Hallie Jane Mae. That is just weird. Where as Abel Edward Smith and Daniel Arlo Smith seem to fit better.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/07/2020 17:07

I think Arlo and Ezra work well together. i really wouldn't give twins (or even siblings) names with the same initial.

Are they identical twins? If so call the second born by the initial which comes alphabetically first. That way they get
to be before their brother on the register at school etc and there's less overshadowing of T2 by T1.

LesLavandes · 21/07/2020 17:00

Awful

DonLewis · 21/07/2020 16:54

Arlo and Ezra?

Cantbutwill · 21/07/2020 16:51

Not keen on Abel at all.

BackforGood · 20/07/2020 20:07

Totally agree @CornedBeef451

They will have the same dob and (presumably) surname. For the first 20 odd years of their life, probably the same address. Please give them different initials/

ty1996 · 20/07/2020 12:07

Love arlo💓

sunlight81 · 20/07/2020 10:21

Thanks for all the feedback - my hubby and I have found it hilarious!!!

I love the fact it's such a diverse range of reply's and the angst some people display is so classic mumsnet!

We aren't 100% and there is still time to change, so who knows, we may actually go a different route Grin

I love them especially for twins. I think they sound lovely together

VenusClapTrap · 20/07/2020 08:58

Too tongue twisty. It’s a nope from me.

4amWitchingHour · 20/07/2020 07:36

Don't particularly like either of the names, but mainly commenting to agree with PPs about not giving them the same initial because it'll make life logistics harder.

nicky7654 · 20/07/2020 07:26

No prefer proper names like Arthur, Oscar, Jack, Thomas, Charlie etc.

TildaTurnip · 20/07/2020 00:55

I’m not keen on either but like your other names.

I don’t think Abel is a name that is usable really for a twin boy. Also agree with above points about difficulties with same sex, date of birth, surname and first initial.

CornedBeef451 · 20/07/2020 00:50

For the sake of any databases they will ever be on, including the NHS and for schools, please choose names that are easily distinguishable. For post reasons choose names with different first letters.

My working life is currently sorting out twins from other duplicates for future school admissions, it's a nightmare. I'm looking at you, parents of Ava and Eva, or Mohammed and Mohammed, I'm also looking at the parents of Khaleesi and Katniss but for other reasons.

123Dancewithme · 20/07/2020 00:41

I like Abel, but Arlo is everywhere at the moment. I think it’s going to date badly.

back2good · 19/07/2020 23:39

Arlo is nice. Not keen on Abel.

What about Arlo and Enzo, which would also work well with Otis, three vowel starting boys' name, each with their own 'letter'.

lukasiak · 19/07/2020 23:36

Makes me think of that cult that Edward tried to off himself at in Twilight.

BackforGood · 19/07/2020 23:34

Twins will be lumped together by people often enough, at least give them names with different initials.

100percentknackered · 19/07/2020 23:33

Good grief, no! Matching names for twins is not cute. Especially if one of them is called Abel! Can you imagine how that’ll go when they find out the murderous bible story?!?

Seriously, maybe you ought to have a read about the difficulties twins face with individuation etc. They’re not a cutesy matching set 🤢

ShyTown · 19/07/2020 23:16

I really like the names of your existing children but I can’t stand Abel or Arlo. Abel murdered by his brother which isn’t great for twin boys and the sound is too similar to Isabel. Arlo sounds like Harlow which isn’t a very nice place (no offence intended, I used to live locally).

Whatsyourflava · 19/07/2020 23:12

Really love both especially Arlo
