Help please - which is better? I love old names
Archibald would be shortened to Archie for everyday but Archibald for later in life to give him more options..

I'm one of many on here who doesn't appear to like Archibald as a name for various reasons.

And Seth isn't what I would consider an 'old' name since it peaked in usage around 2000. Lot of guys in their 20s called Seth. There was a thread on the name back in 2008: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/baby_names/548333-seth

I love the name Archibald but like Arch or Archer for nicknames, the other name we like is Angus. There seems to be a lot of negativity towards Archibald but I would just go with what you like :)

Archer is awful although fine as a surname, I don't like Arch at all and Archibald isn't very nice.

I'd go with Archer rather than Archibald. Still gives nn Archie and provides less cutesy option for later.

Seth is tricky to pronounce imo

Archibald is a family name for me too. I would use it as the formal/legal name even if I were planning to use Archie or Arch on an everyday basis. It's just a regular Scottish name to me - although the Archibalds in my Scottish family trace back to Ireland. Use it if you love it!

If there's either of those in your family and you want to keep the tradition, then I'd opt for it as a middle (or second middle) name.

I can’t imagine anyone would choose to go by Archibald rather than Archie.
