What do people think of Robert?

Me and DW are quite liking this name right now and it’s versatility of nicknames (Rob, Robbie, Bob, Bobby). What do people think of it? For additional context; he already has two brothers called Nicholas George and Peter James. His middle name will be Samuel or Joseph, surnamed Wilson. Thanks Smile

Agree that Robert or Rob is a nice name.

But Bob or Bobby is awful imo.

Kidneybingo · 17/07/2020 05:24

I think it's a great name. I like all the shortenings, especially Rob or Robbie. Underused too, but we'll known, so no spelling issues. I also love Peter and Nicholas for the same reason. Well known but not ubiquitous.

Kokeshi123 · 17/07/2020 01:49

It's great as long as it's shortened to Rob not Bob or Bobby. Such bloody stupid sounding nicknames.

Chienloup · 16/07/2020 23:12

A lovely name. One of my closest friends is a Robert and he is the best.

31Daisy · 16/07/2020 23:09

Love the name but having Rob and Nick siblings seems a bit odd. Both slang for steal!

nildesparandum · 16/07/2020 22:56

Robert was my grandfather's name, but he was always known as Bob
It is my DS2 middle name, my mother wanted me to call him just Robert but I would not have it in case he got to be known as Bobby which I cannot stand.

123Dancewithme · 16/07/2020 22:39

Love it, and it goes perfectly with Nicholas and Peter.

GabrielleChanel · 16/07/2020 19:15

I know a lovely 9 year old bobby

DennisTMenace · 16/07/2020 19:15

It was very nearly ds2's name, but I would have nick named Bert and dp wasn't fond of that. Still a great name.

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 16/07/2020 19:12

One of my DS has it as a middle name. All their names are traditional.

Bill1987 · 16/07/2020 19:10

@Grufallosfriends I know what you mean - and I prefer Rob as a nickname. But it’s not really unusual, there are Williams known as Bill, Edwards as Ted etc.

Ds2 is Robert Joseph, known as Robbie. :)

HathorX · 16/07/2020 19:01

I really like it. I love Bertie as a nickname too, or Robbie. I've known a lot of Robs, Bobs, Robbies, Roberts and never met one I don't like.

BeeyatchPlease · 16/07/2020 18:23

I really like it but I live in West of Scotland where the shortened version would be pronounced by some (with a broad accent) as Boab or Boaby.....which is also Weegie slang for a penis, so that's wasn't happening 😂

daisypond · 16/07/2020 18:18

Yes, it’s good.

Hawkinsfirefly99 · 16/07/2020 18:16

We have a 2 year old called Robert. I love the name. It's a classic. I got the idea for Robert after watching the BbC Gunpowder drama with Robert Catesby being the main protagonist.

It's a classic underused name.

iklboo · 16/07/2020 18:15

BIL1 - fab bloke. Love him to pieces. And we can genuinely say to DS "Bob's your uncle' Grin

Grufallosfriends · 16/07/2020 18:14

Shouldn't it be Rob as nickname?

It's Robert and not Bobert Grin

HalfBloodPrincess · 16/07/2020 18:11

My nephews name. He goes by Bob to his friends but His little brother calls him Bobert

Grufallosfriends · 16/07/2020 18:10

Robert, Nicholas and Peter are great names!

Danniiaddy · 16/07/2020 18:07

I work with a Robert and he likes to be known as Rob but many people call him Bob and he HATES it! Even though he corrects people, he still gets called Bob and it makes him feel old.
That’s the problem with names where there are many possible nicknames.
I’d reconsider.

WithIcePlease · 16/07/2020 18:07

I really like the name Robert and surprised at how low it has been in the popularity rankings but maybe that's changed since I last looked
BIL is rarely shortened to Rob - not that he'd be precious about it but just seems to always be addressed as Robert
The Robert where I work is usually referred to as Roberto 😂

whatshebininagain · 16/07/2020 18:07

I like the fact it's versatile too, with ready-made diminutives. You often hear parents say they picked a name because it "couldn't be shortened" and the kid ends up with a weird nickname at school.

NameChange84 · 16/07/2020 18:02

Sorry I hate it!

But only because all the Roberts and Bobs I’ve ever met have been sexually inappropriate/creepy/pervs and it really put me off the name!

I did teach a delightful little Bobby when I was a student teacher. Without a word of a lie, I bumped into him again when I was in my 30s and he was 20 and HE became creepy and pervy towards me Envy.

Purely anecdotal obviously!

Bill1987 · 16/07/2020 18:02

@MikeUniformMike lmao that would be a laugh.

I agree - I don’t really like Bertie.
