Can you imagine the name Romy on an adult?

Romy works as an adult name. It very nice. It’s traditionally short for Rosemary, I think, but is fine as a stand-alone name. I know one in her 40s.

threeduckslittle · 17/07/2020 13:40

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz No I wouldn't be disappointed at all, a name doesn't dictate someones personality.

My original question was really just whether it could be imagined on a adult as the concern was that it sounds perhaps too much like a nickname.

*@pinkpinecone
I 'know' Romy perfectly well,thanks.
My observation was that a lot of parents who chose Romy will have no idea of any cultural connotations and will choose it believing they are just being a bit edgy.
Unfortunately it's the type of name that attracts such people.Imo of course.

Boireannachlaidir · 17/07/2020 10:21

Romy works night shift in the freezer section of the local Wal-mart. There you go.

pinkpinecone · 17/07/2020 10:14

@Spied Do you say that mostly about names that you don't know? 'Different' often just means they have different cultural origins, just something to consider.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/07/2020 09:08

OP it reads as though you would be disappointed if your child's personality didn't match with their name.

Surely not?

Thinkpinkstink · 17/07/2020 09:05

I know a Romy as an abbreviation of Rosemary. She suits either/both.

Spied · 17/07/2020 09:02

Romy. I don't like it.
I'd think her parents were trying to be a bit 'different' but didn't have much vision.

lilylion · 17/07/2020 08:57

I know a very cool adult Romy if that helps!

I also like Romilly.

DappledThings · 17/07/2020 08:53

Like a girl named Shelby who isn't dainty and pretty, or a boy named Barnaby who isn't the cool artsy type. In those cases, the names sort of become a burden.
Those aren't the impressions I have of either of those names. Shelby is a middle-aged C&W singer. Confident and cool and in possession of a ton of excellent relationship advice.

Barnaby is an over-priveliged oik in his early 20s who wears coloured shirts with white collars and has a job in Daddy's stock broking firm that he got with no effort on his own part.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 16/07/2020 22:06

Why does it matter how people would picture someone with that name? It doesn't mean that's what the person will be like at all. Your personality doesn't come from your name.

sibbys · 16/07/2020 22:00

Cool name!!
I imagine an artsy, beautiful woman with that name

MikeUniformMike · 16/07/2020 21:01

Will you still like it then?

LittleMissBrainy · 16/07/2020 20:59

Sorry, off topic I know but why couldn't you choose your children's names? Isn't that one of the benefits of having children?

I'd assume adoption.

Yes, due to adoption. Smile

@ OP

I think she has a big standard office job, but she does give off an artistic vibe! Very laid back, with a messy style that just works.

123Dancewithme · 16/07/2020 14:38

I know a Romy short for Romina

@LittleMissBrainy

I know a Romy, she's awesome and I'm (secretly) a little bit jealous of her name! I don't think of the film when I see her as she's nothing like the character. However, I've loved the name ever since seeing the film and if I could have chosen my children's names, it would have definitely been on my list.

@nitsandwormsdodger good point, though I don't think my question is that dissimilar to most on this forum. That is a good way to think though and removes some pressure.

I never understood why people get so het up about a name
Just name your baby what you like as long as it's not something obviously embarrassing or with terrible connotations like hitler or Stalin it will all work out fine ,
some will love it others will not
I do not expect my children's names to be universally applauded

BarkandCheese · 16/07/2020 09:44

I don’t think of Romy as cutsie at all, cutsie names are things like Pixie, Posey, Blossom and Dolly. Romy is more like Chloe or Phoebe.

RedRec · 16/07/2020 09:40

Beautiful name. I see it as classy and a bit edgy (in a good way).

may3120 · 16/07/2020 09:36

Romy is a lovely name and I think it works fine for a child as well as an adult, much more so than all the frilly cutesy names that seem to be on trend at the moment.

Can I ask how it is pronounced? "Rommy" or "Roamy"?

userabcname · 16/07/2020 09:02

I have taught a very sullen and stroppy Romy so unfortunately those are my main associations with the name!

TitianaTitsling · 16/07/2020 09:00

I know of a Romy who works in v corporate world.
