Too popular?

Is May too popular? I know it's used a lot as a middle name but do you know many little May's? I love it as a stand alone name.

It's amusing that people are talking about 'classy' names, but then go on to slag off children's names, which really isn't classy - at all. You may not like May (whichever spelling) used as a hyphenated or middle name, but to call it ghastly or tacky just because it isn't to your taste is snobbish beyond belief. I really hope your little darlings grow up to be kinder people than some of you are. There is so much more to class than just a name. Some fairly disgusting attitudes in here.

Thank you all, I adore it. DH's still not massively keen (booohooo 😩)

As a middle name, yes, sadly overused. First name, no way! I work with children and I've never come across a little May. Use it ! Grin

May is lovely.

Jen435 · 16/07/2020 10:11

I know a two year old May.

As long as it's not double barrelled as mentioned above, fine

PetraRabbit · 16/07/2020 09:57

I don't know of any of any age!

backin199one · 16/07/2020 09:54

I absolutely love May as a first name and I so rarely see it suggested on here. It's simple yet it stands out, it's timeless and classic, and it's just beautiful. I've never met anyone called May. Go for it!

Flappingflamingo · 16/07/2020 09:39

Love it

Yellowpolkadottankini · 16/07/2020 07:38

Yes my DH says it sounds Chinese to him so I hope he can see passed that. Love it

@PuntoEBasta

It’s also a Chinese name but I definitely meant English or American people using Mai as a Yooonique spelling of May.

Thneedville · 15/07/2020 23:01

It’s a beautiful name as a first name, please use it!

PuntoEBasta · 15/07/2020 23:00

Please just don’t change the spelling to the godawful Mae or worse still Mai

Mai pronounced ‘may’ is ghastly, agreed, but Mai is a legitimate Welsh name, pronounced ‘my’.

Yellowpolkadottankini · 15/07/2020 22:59

Thank you all so so much.

Yes I would definitely stick with the May spelling, feels complete to me.

Refreshing classy and beautiful.

CrumpetsAndPuzzles · 15/07/2020 22:42

I’m a teacher and I’ve never taught a single girl called May.

NameChange84 · 15/07/2020 22:42

Was just thinking of how refreshing it would be to hear of a little

May Elizabeth Jones

or

May Victoria Smith

And so on amidst all the Ava-Mae and Evie-Mai type names. It’s honestly in a different league as a first name!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 15/07/2020 22:37

Love it. I had a mad Great Auntie May.

bananaskinsnomnom · 15/07/2020 22:35

I love May Grin

I see it frequently as a double barrelled name at school, like Grace and Rose - but not on its own - I would go for it!

NameChange84 · 15/07/2020 22:34

May as a first name is so pretty.

It’s so common as a middle name but, as a teacher, I’ve never come across a May.

Please just don’t change the spelling to the godawful Mae or worse still Mai Envy

Yellowpolkadottankini · 15/07/2020 22:33

Aaaah thanks all. I really do love it and glad it's not overly popular and you don't think it's been ruined by the double barrel/middle names

Merename · 15/07/2020 22:32

I also think lovely and don’t know any.

daisypond · 15/07/2020 22:30

It’s lovely as a first name.

Orphlids · 15/07/2020 22:19

Every other little girl seems to have May tacked onto their first name with a hyphen these days. Ella-May, Rosie-May, Evie-May... the list is endless and each one is ghastly and tacky. However, May on its own is classy, beautiful, understated and fabulous in its simplicity. I think it’s a fabulous choice. I don’t know anyone named May.

RuthW · 15/07/2020 21:56

I only know one May. It's defo not popular as a first name. It's lovely.

Yellowpolkadottankini · 15/07/2020 21:29

Maybe it's less popular than I thought? It seems low on the ONS charts but I wasn't sure if it was something that was rising in popularity or would just sound very plain and meh and blend in with many other similar names like Mila, Millie, Molly, Mia etc? It seems completely different to those names to me though?
