Partly to prove a point to DH, partly to confirm my thoughts is the above name for a boy or girl in your mind?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GrannyBags · 14/07/2020 16:35

It’s a girls name. Not unheard of in the Traveller community where they tend to have Biblical names. I’ve taught two - both lovely girls.

SumAndSubstance · 14/07/2020 16:33

You can't cheat by looking it up online really because it's not a name. Name websites, if they include it, will just randomly assign it a gender or say it's unisex in the same way that most of them make up random meanings!

Flappingflamingo · 14/07/2020 16:29

First thought, the band
Second thought, the Bible
Third thought, jenny from Emmerdale, her name was actually genesis so on that basis I'd say girls name, but not one that should be used ☺️

DramaAlpaca · 14/07/2020 14:41

Neither. But if you made me choose I'd say girl.

JaJaDingDong · 14/07/2020 14:39

I'm going to go with boy, although really in think neither.

InkieNecro · 14/07/2020 14:28

If I was forced to assign it to one sex, I'd say girl. Though I agree with others that is isn't a name for a person in my mind.

AdultFishcakes · 14/07/2020 14:22

@BeanbagMcTavish

It's not either. Really, really not.

But if it was then it would be a boy's name and the boy would look exactly like Phil Collins, even when they were a toddler. IS THAT SOMETHING YOU WANT FOR YOUR CHILD?

TBF my daughter looked like Phil Collins between 12 and 18 months so this is a point very much worth considering

It's (used as) a girls' name in the US, and it's fairly popular although I have a feeling you'd find there are very strong regional (and class) concentrations. I didn't look it up since you asked for gut reactions, but I have definitely seen it referenced as being is the US top 100 in the last decade - not sure if it still is. I've never actually met one.

Aragog · 14/07/2020 14:15

No idea. I wouldn't have a clue on just seeing the name, and wouldn't really want to hazard a guess either.

Letthemysterybe · 14/07/2020 14:13

Girl.

But really neither.

It’s a bit like asking “is bookcase a girls name or a boys name?”

Wheresthebiffer2 · 14/07/2020 14:12

It's a great band.
But if/IF if (please don't) it was used as a child's name, I'd assume MALE.

MinorArcana · 14/07/2020 14:07

I’d guess at a boy.

Probably because the band is all male.

Although it could be either.

AdultFishcakes · 14/07/2020 14:03

Ps concrete answers so far show a 50/50 split!

@ExtremelyBoldSquirrels

I didn’t cheat. I looked online after I’d supplied my guess.
I was appealing to everyone, not you @ExtremelyBoldSquirrels Smile

TheVanguardSix · 14/07/2020 13:50

It's not a name for any human. So you're both wrong.
You'd have to have bats in the belfry to call a child Genesis.
There are, however, many good baby names within the Book of Genesis.

Shayisgreat · 14/07/2020 13:49

It's certainly unusual as a name so not typical for a girl or boy. It sounds more feminine to me but could go either way.

Holyrivolli · 14/07/2020 13:48

As previous posters have said, it’s not a name for boy or girl.

AdultFishcakes · 14/07/2020 13:48

@TinyMetalBirds

If I came across someone called Genesis Smith, to be honest I don’t think I would have a clue whether they were male or female, could be either. Gene is a boy’s name so there’s that, but Jen is a girl’s name. I am increasingly envisaging Genesis Smith as an old bearded man, but she could also be a crime fighting futuristic space girl in a catsuit.
Exactly the reason I’m asking - you see if I hear “Hilary” I think “girl”... buy “Hayden” “boy”

Neither are spelled differently depending on whether they’re the male or the female use.

Hence the interest in straw polling Genesis - I’m just interested, hence the appeal for no cheating by looking online 😁

Oh & if it were a name it seems mores masculine than feminine

ExtremelyBoldSquirrels · 14/07/2020 13:47

I did just look on nameberry and allegedly it’s a top 100 girls name (but totally unisex really) in whatever bizarre place they pull their statistics from. I don’t think it’s a top 100 name in any actual place though.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 14/07/2020 13:46

Book of

Or the band

onalongsabbatical · 14/07/2020 13:46

It's the first book in the Bible and it means origin or beginning, and would be an extremely pretentious name for a child, almost like calling a child God...

BalloonSlayer · 14/07/2020 13:46

Before I clicked on this thinking (oh please,no, poor kid) a second thought crossed my mind which was "why do I think it's a boy's name?"

It could be shortened to both Jenny and Sissy so I guess it would be better as a girl's name. But, please no.
