Hi all,

We have a baby girl due in a few weeks, and have a list of about 10 names we are open to. The one that stands out to me is 'Lana' and in my head when I think about the baby I call her Lana!

So I've been pretty set on Lana but since then I've read about what it spells backwards... now I can't stop thinking that!

What are people's thoughts on the name Lana? Do you think the backwards spelling would cause problems for her later in life or am I completely over thinking it?

We had a girl at school called Lana and she was teased a LOT because of what her name was backwards. Definitely Luna or Alanna. Good luck!

SnowdropFox · 14/07/2020 22:07

Only ever heard it pronounced La-na here (Scotland) but I imagine in some accents it would come out different. Don't like the Lar pronunciation myself, makes it a bit of a mouthful to a nice simple name.

Cam2020 · 14/07/2020 22:07

I would never have thought of the backwards spelling.

You can make a joke out of almost any name if you try hard enough. If you like it, don't let that put you off.

Bubbletrouble43 · 14/07/2020 22:00

If it derives from svetlana... Do you say svetlanna?? Svetlarna I think. I can't even imagine not pronouncing it Larna. I've known 2, both would pronounce it Larna.

Grufallosfriends · 14/07/2020 11:43

But Larna has man R? Surely it's not Lar na?!

I'd say Lah na.

Bubbletrouble43 · 14/07/2020 10:37

There is a place called Lanner in Cornwall. Ironically the Lana I know moved there. It is definitely pronounced Larna

Grufallosfriends · 14/07/2020 06:40

Of course it's Lana and not Larna Hmm

GoshHashana · 14/07/2020 06:39

Stripper's stage name.

GarlicMcAtackney · 12/07/2020 23:56

It’s only pronounced with an ‘r’ in it if you have an English accent (only certain areas of England.). It’s Lana.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/07/2020 16:16

Not remarkable or anything but It’s a nice nAme. There’s nothing to stop you from spelling it Larna.

Giggorata · 12/07/2020 16:02

It is also short for Svetlana.

TippledPink · 12/07/2020 14:48

Lana is pronounced 'Larna'- if it was pronounced 'Lanna' it would be spelt that way.

Grufallosfriends · 12/07/2020 13:28

Sounds like wool.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 12/07/2020 12:42

How about Lara as an alternative? Lovely name.Smile

GarlicMcAtackney · 12/07/2020 11:21

‘Larna’ sounds dreadful. Pronounced it as it’s spelled- Lana. But the anal thing would put me off, it’s what I first think of when I see or hear the name.

Whatsyourflava · 12/07/2020 10:58

Lana is lovely. One of my favourite names
I personally wouldn't be worried about the spelling backwards thing

Tillygetsit · 11/07/2020 23:27

My sil has a Lanah for that reason.

Bubbletrouble43 · 11/07/2020 22:07

Close friend has an almost 16 Yr old Lana. It's a great name, love it. Works for any age and is cool without being pretentious.

TooBusyBeingYoursToFall · 11/07/2020 22:03

I know one, she's 15 now. Her friends at school have picked up on what it spells backwards but I think they just light-heartedly joke about it, rather than tease her for it, and it doesn't bother her. It's a lovely name.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 11/07/2020 22:01

It's like Anna, with an extra L at the front. I like it.

Onestepup · 11/07/2020 21:46

It's a nice name and the backwards name never occurred to me.

Pinkyyy · 11/07/2020 21:36

I absolutely love the name Lana. I don't know its origins but it just sounds so classically beautiful to me and I'd have never even thought of it spelling anal backwards!

user1493494961 · 11/07/2020 21:33

Every other little girl seems to have a Luna, Lyra, Lola type name, they all blend into one after a while.

Bananalanacake · 11/07/2020 21:27

DP and I are Star Trek fans. He always loved the name B'e'lanna and wanted to call his dd that. We realised the registrar wouldn't let us get away with apostrophes so we normalised our dd's name to Lana. Now she's 6 it really suits her, unusual and beautiful.Smile

mylittleavalon · 11/07/2020 21:01

Would never think of it backwards just think of Lana Del Rey. I think it's a nice name Smile
