Ellie and Ollie?

DD is an Elizabeth but everyone calls her Ellie. Currently expecting a boy and the only name we agree on is Oliver. But we can't decide if it sounds silly?
Even if we didn't shorten his name to Ollie like we did DD from the beginning it will get shortened eventually to Ollie won't it?

I agree that Ellie and Ollie sound like cartoon characters. It's a shame Elizabeth isn't Beth or Lizzie (or something similar) as then it wouldn't be a problem. Sticking by Oliver is probably the best plan.

Enterthedragons · 09/07/2020 14:40

You can’t have Ellie and Ollie.

Lavenderblues · 06/07/2020 07:32

Ellie and Olly doesn't seem as samey

They still sound silly together! The spelling makes no difference.

ShyOwl · 06/07/2020 06:19

@Nocturnalpearl it's Oliver we love, so I'm tempted because DD might choose to go by one of the other Elizabeth nn by the time she goes to school, or even her middle name!

Maybe we just firmly stick with Oliver, both DB and I are called by our full names by family and nn by friends etc, so Ellie & Ollie wouldn't be used together

Perhaps spelling it Olly would help a bit? That's how my Oliver spells his shortening Ellie and Olly doesn't seem as samey

madwoman1ntheattic · 06/07/2020 01:41

My Oliver is 18 and has never been called Ollie... I don’t have an Ellie though. (Although if I had an Elizabeth I wouldn’t see an issue with having an Oliver...)
I did at one point provide residential care for an Olivia. We had a few moments where I called and both turned up (Oliver and Olivia, obv) but it was honestly less weird or problematic than I had envisioned. Grin

Sittingontheveranda · 06/07/2020 01:39

I think it sounds cartoonish tbh.

I think having two or more children with names ending with ee sounds a bit naff.

Nocturnalpearl · 06/07/2020 01:36

Is it Oliver or Ollie that you love? If it's Ollie then I wouldn't do it. You will end up calling them the wrong name - I have three with very different sounding names and still confuse them. If you like the 'ee' sound what about something with a consonant at the start such as Toby, Jonny, frankie etc. If you like Oliver than I know many older who are not known as Ollie and by which point you will rarely refer to your children and their names in the same sentence anyway! Once they're older it will become less of an issue x

Zoflorabore · 05/07/2020 22:43

If you like the name then go for it!

My Oliver is 17. He has been Ollie for as long as I can remember. Only grandparents tend to use his full name and he does use it now and again. We also have a Lucy.

I know a family with a Ollie and Molly is which sound a bit odd but they like it and that’s all that matters.

Good choice of name op Wink

KetoWinnie · 05/07/2020 22:40

@ShyOwl i would assume it will definitely be shortened to Ollie and therefore too similar. Nathaniel is nice, as is Nate.

RuthW · 05/07/2020 22:36

It's absolutely fine as they are only nick names.

JustAddCoffee91 · 05/07/2020 22:24

I really like it, I have an Oliver (Ollie) and he would have been called Ellie if he was a girl but I do think the two names sound really nice together, it's up to you at the end of the day if you like it then go for it

ShyOwl · 05/07/2020 22:23

Nathaniel sounds evil apparently Hmm I think we are going to struggle!

wellingtonsandwaffles · 05/07/2020 22:19

Edward and Nathaniel both lovely with great nn potential! Nathaniel will be less common .

ShyOwl · 05/07/2020 22:14

@daisypond Edward/Ted is definitely worth considering, we both have grandparents whose name was shortened to Ed to feel like Edward is a nice nod to them

@ThroughThickAndThin01 actually just waiting for DH to see what his thoughts are, I've just been thinking I would rather Nathaniel to Nathan, there's something about Nathan I don't love

OP posts:
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/07/2020 21:53

Ellie and Ollie is silly.

Do you like Nathaniel any better than Nathan?

daisypond · 05/07/2020 21:49

Edward shortens to Ted or Teddy, not just Eddie. So you could have Ellie and Ted, Teddy, etc. That’s fine.

bluemoon2468 · 05/07/2020 21:46

I think Ellie and Ollie sounds quite silly tbh. And I'm yet to meet a teenage/adult Oliver who hasn't become Ollie eventually. I know a fair few families who have children with matching/similar sounding names but I've always found it quite odd. I know a family with a Holly and a Hayley... they're basically the same name 🙈

ShyOwl · 05/07/2020 21:05

DHs other suggestion was Nathan (Nate) but I'm not sure on it?

OP posts:
ShyOwl · 05/07/2020 21:04

Thanks all, mixed responses.. I can't shake the feeling it'll sound silly but I love the name!
Doesn't help my nephew is also an ie ending!

DD is 2.5, but she very much suits Ellie, we fell in love with that first and then extended it to Elizabeth.
I do call it her occasionally and she knows her big name is Elizabeth, but if I call her Elizabeth she tells me she's not Elizabeth she's Ellie, quite firmly!

I had a similar situation myself in that my parents used my short name, loved my long name but felt it was too long for such a tiny baby (I was a premie) but then I went to school and asked to be my long name!
so I know there's no predicting how it will go

We also like Edward but have the same dilemma with Ellie and Eddie Blush clearly have a theme!

Lavenderblues · 05/07/2020 20:57

No way! Ollie and Ellie is ridiculous, sorry.

ThanksItHasPockets · 05/07/2020 20:46

I have taught a LOT of Olivers over the last fifteen years and am yet to meet one who hadn’t become Ollie / Oli / Olly by secondary school. I’m sure that Olivers who remain Oliver exist but I’ve never met one.
