Harriet or Charlotte

We are due with our second baby (gender unknown, but we are certain of a boys name), at the end of the month and I can't decide between two girls names. We already have a daughter names Evelyn.

Struggling to decide between...

Harriet (would always be known has Hattie)

Or

Charlotte (would always be known as Lottie)

(Middle name for either would most likely be Eliza)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

@Lavenderblues I guess we just have differing opinions. Elodie doesn't feel right for us and I don't think goes well with sister Evelyn (Ever-lyn).
I don't know if Elodie is an old name or a modern one, but it sounds much more modern and like it could be a 'trendy' name that lots of people might choose now...
We prefer more classic names

@Fullmoonagain we have a close friend whose daughter is named Elena, not keen on Mary and whilst it's pretty,
Elodie just doesn't feel like our style.
Also don't think Elodie and Evelyn (pronounced Ever-lyn) sound right together.

I'm a Harriet, I like it, if you're interested in that perspective! I know a few grown up Hatties and one in my son's reception class.

I've never been a Hattie - my aunt tried it when I was a baby but it's just not me. My mum and husband call me Harry and my dad and sister call me something different. Through school I was Harriet. Harriets are either horsey or really cool (I'm the latter, obvs Grin)

Tinamou · 05/07/2020 08:07

Hattie

Lavenderblues · 05/07/2020 08:00

Elodie is beautiful. Much nicer than Harriet or Charlotte imo.

Fullmoonagain · 04/07/2020 23:12

Sorry to go against the grain, but Harriet sounds stuffy and harsh to my ears, and no easy shortening. But if you love it though, go for it! Charlotte is lovely but quite popular. What about, Elodie, Eleanor or Mary.

@MikeUniformMike our surname is Jamieson.

So either
Charlotte Eliza Jamieson
Lottie Eliza Jamieson

Or

Harriet Eliza Jamieson
Hattie Eliza Jamieson

Lottie!

I love Harriett, love Lottie, like charlotte but really hate Hattie.

My order of preference of all those would be:

Harriet
Lottie
Charlotte
Hattie

Lavenderblues · 04/07/2020 20:44

Shorten to Hat 🎩 or Hattie 🧢?!

Thighdentitycrisis · 04/07/2020 20:21

Harriet
Goes with Evelyn better
Less heard of than Charlotte
More suited to a girly girl or tomboy imo
Shorten to Hattie or Hat

Lavenderblues · 04/07/2020 20:09

I like Charlotte but hate Lottie.

Harriet sounds harsh imo.

zigaziga · 04/07/2020 19:30

I love both - nicknames and full names.

I think for me Hattie would edge it but only just.

17caterpillars1mouse · 04/07/2020 18:40

I love Harriet nn Hattie.

I like Charlotte too but much prefer Harriet

daisypond · 04/07/2020 18:30

Not wild about either. Harriet is dull and worthy. But Charlotte is bland and without any style, to me. I’d go for Harriet out of the two. It’s a name that could grow on me.

sweetnosugar · 04/07/2020 17:34

Adore Lottie! 💕

MikeUniformMike · 04/07/2020 14:56

I like both, and both Hattie and Lottie.
Which sounds best with the surname?

Edenember · 04/07/2020 00:44

Another vote for Harriet. Beautiful name and on my list ♥️

QuantamBaby · 04/07/2020 00:09

Lottie definitely....

MintyCedric · 03/07/2020 23:58

I love both names. Slightly prefer Harriet as its more unusual, but equally not keen of Hattie as a nickname a d prefer Lottie!

mellowww · 03/07/2020 23:53

Charlotte

Lollypop4 · 03/07/2020 23:52

My SIL is Charlotte but has always been known as Lottie. Though a lot of people call her "Lot" too.
I love the name.
Harriet might also get shortened to "Harri"

thistimelastweek · 03/07/2020 23:48

Charlotte. Harriet.
Lottie. Hattie.
Like them all.
Sorry. I haven't helped.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 03/07/2020 23:44

I prefer Charlotte to Harriet. However I prefer Hattie to Lottie.
Sorry that's not helpful is it.

Although I love Eliza as a middle name

Starbuggy · 03/07/2020 23:16

I love both but prefer Charlotte/Lottie
I think Lottie is a more common nickname for children now than it was when we were kids, and if you introduce her as Lottie then nobody will call her Charlie

Whatsyourflava · 03/07/2020 22:24

Really love both names
I think Lottie would work well as a nickname for Charlotte especially these days where nursery and school ask you what you'd like your child to be "known as" so just write "Lottie" (and not Charlie) on the form
