Harriet or Charlotte

We are due with our second baby (gender unknown, but we are certain of a boys name), at the end of the month and I can't decide between two girls names. We already have a daughter names Evelyn.

Struggling to decide between...

Harriet (would always be known has Hattie)

Or

Charlotte (would always be known as Lottie)

(Middle name for either would most likely be Eliza)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Flossie is your boy Henry? I know a brother and sister Henry and Harriet - I will admit I did ponder on it for a while since Harriet comes from Henrietta, and a Harry is short for Henry 😄

BabyLlamaZen · 06/07/2020 13:28

I love Charlotte but it's quite common now. Hattie is gorgeous.

Nocturnalpearl · 06/07/2020 01:24

Another vote for Harriet! I love it

NC4Now · 05/07/2020 23:00

I prefer Harriet but I like Eliza best. I’d go for Eliza Harriet. I think it flows better.

Thanks @CookieDoodles (and sorry for the multiple posts)! Thomas is a lovely name, although not an option for us as DH is Thomas!

I have a 6yo Lottie. She's Charlotte but opted to be Lottie at school. She's one of only two in her school so not overly popular. She's never been called Charlie.

joyjester · 05/07/2020 20:11

DD. not DO

joyjester · 05/07/2020 20:11

Charlotte....but that's what I called my DO. ....Chars for short. its timeless.

CookieDoodles · 05/07/2020 20:05

@flossiegrippiter we also liked James (but too similar to our surname) and Oscar.

@flossiegeippiter of course, we have chosen Thomas as our boys name. (Second name Maxwell)

Can I ask your boys name OP? We have Charlotte as our middle name and I love Harriet but it's to close to DS name to use but I'm struggling with a boys name for baby number2! Seems like we have similar taste!

Harriet. Hattie is gorgeous.

HowFastIsTooFast · 05/07/2020 14:48

I prefer Harriet, years ago I knew a Harriet who went by 'Hettie' as a nn, I always thought that was pretty.

CookieDoodles · 05/07/2020 14:44

Thanks everyone. Both seem to be liked, but Harriet seems to be the slightly more popular choice on here.
The nicknames however seem to be what people are not keen on! Slightly more not liking Lottie.
We have decided on Harriet as we like both the full name and shortened version of Hattie too. Plus I heard someone use it whilst calling her daughter today and liked the sound of it.
Hubby says he can deal with her choosing to be known as Harri if she wanted to as she got older. He just wouldn't use it himself.
So Harriet Eliza she will be.
Just watch - we'll have a boy now after all of this! (Luckily we are set on a name for a boy)

I like both but would pick Harriet as not as popular .

MaryShelley1818 · 05/07/2020 14:33

Love Harriet, Charlotte and Hattie! All beautiful names.
Really don't like Lottie but I work on a renowned "troublesome" estate and it's becoming very common there and a few other places.

lostfrequencies · 05/07/2020 14:01

Definitely Charlotte for me.

Chocolatecake12 · 05/07/2020 12:45

100% Harriet. Absolutely my favourite girls name. Charlotte is ok but just doesn’t compare in my opinion!!

zingally · 05/07/2020 12:17

I prefer Harriet, but only because I prefer the nicknames to those that come with Charlotte.

I also imagine myself having more fun with a Harriet than I do with a Charlotte.

SE13Mummy · 05/07/2020 10:32

Harriet, definitely. Especially as you don't really like the name Charlotte.

I know a couple of Harriets in their 40s, one teen (known as Hattie or Hats) and a couple of under fives (known as Hattie). I think it's a fabulous name with lots of options for abbreviations. FWIW, the Harriets I know aren't horsey or 'stuffy'.

MrsH497 · 05/07/2020 09:35

I have a Charlotte (7 weeks old) so I'm biased

Not keen on Harriet or Hattie I'm afraid

CookieDoodles · 05/07/2020 09:34

@Phthalo yes that's helpful, thank you. I actually prefer the full name Harriet rather than Charlotte. As I said earlier, Charlotte was not ever on our list - only Lottie. Charlotte would have just been a formality. Whereas I like both Harriet and Hattie.
I did know it could be shortened to Harry, but I am surprised at how many people have said that, rather than Hattie. I like the fact she could be Hattie when little and if she wanted to when she was older, she could use her full name or Harri. Husband is not so keen on the thought of it being shortened to Harry.

Having said all of this, we said we'd refer to our daughter Evelyn as Evie when she was born. We did for a couple of weeks and it didn't seem right so she's been Evelyn ever since! So there's a good chance I'd always just use Harriet!
