What do you think of the name Jasper?

We are expecting a second boy in November and considering names. I quite like the name Jasper but am not sure.

I associate it with being a name people often call their pets - anyone else agree?

Also, I think the gemstone association might be tough for a boy. Do you think people would associate the name primarily with the gemstone or as the English version of Caspar / Gaspar etc?

Husband says it sounds posh - do you agree?

I prefer Jasper to other versions of the name, eg Caspar, possibly because the -ar ending sounds a bit awkward in English to my ear.

It's a dogs name to
Me sorry.

FelicityPike · 29/06/2020 11:01

Love it, but it’s become as common as muck.

weepingwillow22 · 29/06/2020 11:00

It reminds me more of Jasper Carrott than a pet. Probably my age.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 29/06/2020 10:59

I think of carrots.
Grin

ChanklyBore · 29/06/2020 10:59

It brings to mind the word exasperated for me.

I don’t know what that says about me, but there you go.

Buryit · 29/06/2020 10:58

I liked it but we had to cross it off due to DH not being able to get over the wasp connection.

ILoveStickers · 29/06/2020 10:57

It's not a name I would use, but I like it, iyswim. Seems like a normal name to me - cute on a baby (or indeed a cat) but can definitely imagine meeting an adult Jasper too.

I quite like the gemstone association. Nicer on a boy than a girl, somehow!

@HunkyPunk

I really like the name, and wouldn't even have thought of the gemstone till reading this thread, but can't get beyond ndn's dog being called Jasper. If you didn't already know of a pet with that name, though, I don't think there would be an obvious association, like Rover, or Spot! Lots of people call their pets 'human' names.
Another dog called Jasper! Seems I am not imagining the animal name association. I wonder why it is a popular name for pets.

Interesting that not many people associate it with the gemstone. I have a gemstone name (Amber) that I'm not massively fond of so maybe this is more of an issue for me.

Know a 2 yr old Jasper seems to go by Jazz. Lovely family, not at all posh (northern). Cute.

Rafflesway · 29/06/2020 10:52

Really nice!

I too had a fabulous cat named Jasper many years ago. 😁

@LilacSloth

Nice name but to answer your questions:
  1. My Aunt's dog is called Jasper
  2. Didn't know about the gemstone
  3. I think it does sound posh
  4. Jasper is definitely much better than Casper (the friendly ghost).
Thanks :) Seems like it is a fairly popular name for a pet but not like calling the poor boy Fido!! Yes, we're not keen on the friendly ghost association.

I know a Jasper, I think its a lovely name :)

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 29/06/2020 10:48

I absolutely love it. I know a very lovely Jasper.

It is a slang term for a wasp in some parts of England but I think this is pretty localised.

abigailwendover · 29/06/2020 10:40

I really like it ☺️

Isthisfinallyit · 29/06/2020 10:38

I love the name Jasper and it was on my list (but am expecting a girl now). I didn't make the connection with the gemstone.

Thanks for these responses. I didn't realise it was a popular name, but that's not a big problem for me.

Seems I'm the only one who thinks this is an animal name, maybe because I had a cat called Jasper when I was a kid!

I love it. On my list if we have a DS2

BuffaloCauliflower · 29/06/2020 10:30

I really like it. Probably is a bit posh but most of the names I like are so not a problem for me.

ineedaholidayy · 29/06/2020 10:30

I like Jasper and had it on our list. I also thought it may have been quite smart sounding but now it's booming in popularity and I don't think it sounds it anymore.

It's a lovely name but that has put me off. If you don't mind the popularity then I'd have no issues with the jem association.
