Clementine - all the questions!

stardrop87 · 28/06/2020 17:50

We're expecting our first little girl and quite keen on the name Clementine but wondering about a few things...

Pronunciation - would you pronounce it Clementyne or teen?

Nicknames? Which are best?

Middle names - really struggling with middle names that flow nicely.

Any help appreciated! X

I would pronounce it 'tyne' at the end. I'm not at all keen on Clemmie though, it sounds too much like 'clammy' or 'phlegmy', neither of which are great associations!

Tillygetsit · 28/06/2020 23:02

I always said Clement ine like the song but dd has one in her preschool called Clementeen and her nn is Teeny!

Flowerpowersy · 28/06/2020 22:05

Mandarine and Clementine are both TEEN.

Flowerpowersy · 28/06/2020 22:05

Clemen tEEn.

Like Josephine, Christine or Evangeline.

Like the fruit!

twinkledag · 28/06/2020 21:57

Teen!

stardrop87 · 28/06/2020 21:53

I feel like from going on the responses whatever pronunciation we use people will just use the one they feel is right...

As for pronunciation, it’s tyne for English and teen for French (Clémentine).

AdelaideK · 28/06/2020 20:27

I'd say Clementyne. I've never heard of it being pronounced Teen.

It's a nice name but I'm not fussed on Clemmy.

SunbathingDragon · 28/06/2020 20:27

I know four and think it’s a lovely name that is increasing in popularity for babies born recently.

CaffiSaliMali · 28/06/2020 20:24

I always thought it was pronounced ClemenTYNE, whereas the fruit is ClemenTEEN. Like how the instrument viola, is vee-oh-luh and the name Viola is Vye-luh, the name isn't pronounced like the object of the same spelling.

stardrop87 · 28/06/2020 20:23

I'm not 100% sold on the name so I'm also keen to hear any similar names I might like, all suggestions welcome! X

Tyne for me. I love it, and love vintagey names others sneer at, but I don’t think I’d be ‘brave’ enough to use it, I’ve never met one and it feels a bit out there to me, seems like there are a few out there from this thread tho.

grufallosfriends · 28/06/2020 20:01

Clementine like Christine or Emmeline (een).

I wouldn't shorten it, but maybe Clem or Clemmy?

june2007 · 28/06/2020 19:55

Clementine. (tyne not teen) Anne or Lucy, Jane, Ruth, Like Clementyne Joy.

whatausername · 28/06/2020 19:44

I like Teen better in my accent 😂 it seems clear, judging by this thread, that you can pick which pronunciation you prefer like parents do with Helena and Mila.

MN:
Rosalie (Rose is a total filler)
Joy
Merryn
Louise
Helen
Mary
Theresa
August (maybe a mouthful?)
Carys
Sylvie
Pearl
Lucinda
Yvonne
Rachel
Ailsa
Odette
Ruth

ProperVexed · 28/06/2020 19:31

Clementeeen. I love it. It was my choice for a girl....I had boys. I might have to use it for my next cat as far too old for a baby now. Super name.

scrivette · 28/06/2020 19:30

Tyne with Clemmie if it was shortened.

I like Rose as it's a classic, although very popular at the moment but wouldn't put me off.

MaverickDanger · 28/06/2020 19:21

Clementyne here.

I really like the suggestion of Clementine Mary and one syllable names also work.

Clementine Faye
Clementine June

Curveball:
Clementine Harper

I’d avoid the obvious Rose, May or Grace.

Twizbe · 28/06/2020 19:18

My SiL is Clem. She is Clemency properly. Her parents liked Clem but not Clementine. I think it's a lovely name

Chocolatecake12 · 28/06/2020 19:14

Lovely name whatever the pronunciation.
I think a short middle name would go nicely
Faye
Kate
Eve
Beth
Anne

SecretWitch · 28/06/2020 19:13

We have a sweet six yr old Clementine in our neighborhood. I love the name. They pronounce her name as ClemenTINE. Her nickname is CT.

helia · 28/06/2020 19:10

Clementeen like Clementine Churchill.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/06/2020 19:10

Clem-on-TEEN is how I would pronounce it, unless told otherwise.

It's a lovely name, and there's absolutely no need to worry about 'planning' a nickname, they develop naturally. My DS's nickname has absolutely nothing to do with his actual name!

MissMarplesHandbag · 28/06/2020 19:02

Beautiful name.
Teen.
