We are due a girl September and have a list of names we like but I haven't come across any that have jumped out at me and screamed 'The One'
Am I expectjng too much from a name? Is there such a thing as the perfect name or do you find one you like and they grow into it?
Interested to hear other people's experiences...

I loved DS1's name, and we spent ages with two at the top of the list (my choice and DH's) and I was so happy when he came around to mine. DS2's I liked but didn't love, we had 3 names and chose the combination of first and middle that sounded best, but now I love it and couldn't imagine choosing anything else.

Poetryinaction · 01/07/2020 22:58

I loved my first and second borns' names. The third I had a boys name I loved but she was a girl. I wasn't sure when we named her, but she has always been such a fab little person, I now love the name because of her.

Minai · 30/06/2020 16:22

I loved ds1’s name since before I was pregnant but with ds2 it was difficult. I couldn’t think of a name that I loved as much as ds1’s and anything I liked DH didn’t. So we ended up compromising on a name that we both quite liked but didn’t really love.

He’s 18 months now and I love love love his name now because it’s him. I love it just as much as ds1’s name so I would say if you end up using a name that you just like you will probably end up loving it when it’s actually your own baby’s name.

I picked dds name before i even met dh. Not sure what i would have done if he didnt like it as it was the only name i considered. Dd is 15 now and i still love it as much as i did then

babychinoo · 29/06/2020 22:46

Yep my sons name (Arthur) was definitely the one! As soon as we saw the name that was it and it stuck, still absolutely adore it

weegiemum · 29/06/2020 22:12

Our Dd1 was named the name I'd loved since I was at school, luckily dh likes it as well. If she had been a boy, she would have been Matthew.

Then we had ds, and decided on a totally different name for him, if he had been a girl he'd have been Madeline.

Then with dd2 we'd gone off M and named her after dhs grandma who died just before she was born. We'd come back round to Matthew for a boy back then.

I love all their names, I think we made excellent choices, with a tricky rude-sounding German surname to work with too!!

HairyToity · 29/06/2020 21:32

Yes for my daughter, no for my son's name. DH loves our son's name though.

TruffleMama · 29/06/2020 15:49

I'm 12+3 with my first pregnancy. A Harmony test revealed we're having a girl.

When I was a young teenager, I met a friend and instantly fell in love with her name. She moved away a few years later but I always remembered her name and I knew I wanted it for my daughter, if I ever had one.

Twenty years later, and I still love the name and it's what I will name my daughter. Thankfully my DP loves the name too. Phew! However, it is also the name of his cat!! LOL! So we are now calling the cat by a shortened version.

Before we found out we were having a girl, we really struggled to agree on boys names. I didn't like any that my DP loved and he didn't like any that I loved. We agreed on some that we both liked enough to name our child.. but I don't feel we loved any of those names or felt like they were "the one".

YellowEllis · 29/06/2020 15:30

DH suggested our DS' name when I was 5 months pregnant and I hated it. Absolutely hated it. Vetoed it and we didn't speak of it again.

By the time I was due we still hadn't picked. Agreed to wait until the birth. Ended up having a rather dramatic birth so we didn't speak about it, we're just soaking it all in. My mum came to visit that night, DH went to the toilet and i hissed at her "He looks like a name dh loved but I hated. Don't tell DH"

Took me a few hours to admit to DH, but it is now his name. It was just him. I looked at him and it was all I saw. The second I saw him I just knew. It was so weird.

We had one picked out but didn’t feel like it suited her when she arrived. It took us about 3-4 days after she was born to decide (we were in hospital for that long as it was awful birth) and it just popped into my DH’s head and he asked me what I thought. I agreed immediately. We never had it down as a name option so came completely out of the blue!

^^ This is exactly what happened with us. I really love my DD's name and definitely think it's worth waiting to meet your little one.

When I would hear people saying they just didn't look like 'X' I'd secretly be thinking that's ridiculous, it's a baby and it looks like whatever you've named it. Totally got it though when DD arrived![/quote]
Ah that’s nice! I agree I thought it sounded a bit ridiculous and precious but now I get it. I just imagined her having that name and it would be cute but I think she suits her name better. I couldn’t say what it was about her that made us change our minds though, completely impossible to describe. I really like that we picked a name that we hadn’t even thought of so it was really fresh. I don’t think I’d pick out a name if I had another (although 100% wont ever have the emotional energy to ever do that again!)

ladycarlotta · 29/06/2020 13:21

I didn't ADORE dd's name in the way I did one or two others, but it mattered more to me that both my partner and I really liked it, and it had sentimental family connections for me.

It was also the most 'wearable' iyswim, it's a name that works in lots of languages and is well known while still being unusual. I felt she could go anywhere with that name, as opposed to some I liked that were quite ostentatious/specific. Speaking as someone whose name was v unusual when I was growing up (quite trendy now), I wouldn't want to lumber her with that experience.

No regrets. I think it's lovely and it really suits her. I don't think it has to be all wow and fireworks, it just has to feel right.

tatasa · 29/06/2020 13:00

First 2, I still like, but probably would go for different names if they were born today. DC 3, love the name, but it has become very common, and she hates it.

Nighttimefreedom · 29/06/2020 12:56

Loved my DS name but DD's I just liked. It was difficult finding one we both liked as we had differing tastes. It gets a lot of compliments and she suits it.

captainraymondholt · 29/06/2020 12:48

I liked my dd's name. But it was a compromise name - not the "love" name for either of us. She loves it (now a young adult) and I have grown to love it more. She definitely suits it and I cannot imagine her being the names that I preferred for her beforehand.
I love my ds's name. But he hates it. So I kind of wish I'd chosen a less unusual and more mainstream name for his sake.

TreesoftheField · 29/06/2020 06:51

Daughter's name yes.
We had completely different opinions on boys names. Did love it but feel not so keen now. Feel a bit weird saying it!

roxfox · 29/06/2020 00:04

I absolutely love my little girls name and there were never any other options in terms of first name, we just picked it and love it.

My only worry is how I'll pick one as nice for future DC!!!!!

Best of luck picking a name op.... I'm sure you'll find one that feels right for your family Thanks

Tillygetsit · 28/06/2020 22:55

Dc1 and 2 were, with exh. I'm afraid I loved ds1 name so much I really put my foot down. Exhs name as middle. I still adore that name. Dd1 was a compromise but she suits it so well that I love it now and dd2 with dh2 has a gorgeous friendly name that suits her placid personality. Love all their names a lot.

HotSince82 · 28/06/2020 22:34

list

HotSince82 · 28/06/2020 22:33

Yes all of them, still do.
I habe Eden, Sylvie, Reuben, Delilah and Raphael.

I have used ones that were on our list for firts DS and DD for subsequent ones. DH more or less gave me free reign with names though.

MaverickDanger · 28/06/2020 22:18

I thought I was set on boys names and since getting pregnant, DH has completely changed my mind.

I always wanted Caleb or Cillian, but he’s made me fall in love with Lachlan.

We’ve got two boys names we love and two girls names we love, to the point that i would still use them if close friends or family also chose them.

Whatsyourflava · 28/06/2020 22:09

@Scubalubs87 how funny - I wrote Lucy because I love the name! It's a classic but never been overdone! Lucky you - nice name!

fieldofwheat · 28/06/2020 22:00

I didn't find out the sex of my two whilst pregnant so came up with a short list which we agreed to pick from.

For DS1 we had a favourite which we both agreed on and both loved it (and still do).

For DS2 we could not agree at all. My DH flatly refused all of the names I loved and equally I couldn't stand the ones he picked. In the end he suggested on that I thought was good, but when DS2 arrived I really wasn't sure. But the birth was traumatic, I had general anaesthetic and I was so out of it that I just agreed to the name without really being sure. A week later I was really regretting it and have struggled a lot with it - but now he's getting older (15 months) he's kind of grown into it more and I can't imagine him being called anything else. That said, I do wish I had spent more time considering names while I was still pregnant and fought a bit harder for the names I did really love.

MrsH497 · 28/06/2020 21:47

@powkin 😂 don't worry I'm shattered and wasn't convinced the post made any sense!
We agreed more on boys names than girls. Least I've now got those lists for any future little ones! Looking at her she couldn't be any other name 🥰 middle names were set before the first name as they are family names.

Boringnamechanging · 28/06/2020 21:42

A friend of mine changed her sons name 5 times before she registered him so that always worried me about deciding on one name. With ds we had 3 names but 1 that was the top and that's the one he got and I still love it.

Dd we had much harder time with because my taste and dh differed more so when we found one we both loved we kept coming back to it. It really does suit her.

I think that once the name is your child it becomes a part of them and you love it because you love them. If that makes sense.
