Thoughts on...... Elsie

VintageGirl89 · 28/06/2020 15:58

Just looking for some thoughts/opinions on the name Elsie? Am concerned it might be quite old sounding next to Noah.

I'm not worried about popularity, I actually prefer top 100 names having had an uncommon name myself growing up and hating it.
Siblings are Noah and Jacob.

The other names we are considering are:
Isabella, Daisy, Poppy, Amelia, Connie, Chloe, Robyn (worried this could only be used for a Christmas baby?), Lily-Rose (people on here don't seem to like double barrel names?) and Delilah (negative biblical reference? Maybe off putting slighty).

Which would you pick? And why?

Many thanks.

I really like Elsie. Of your other options, Connie is my preference.

bluebellation · 28/06/2020 18:13

My Grandma was an Elsie and she was a miserable old bag, so no! It's so 'old lady'.

VintageGirl89 · 28/06/2020 18:01

@Whatsyourflava I'm worried Delilah would be too linked to the biblical name and tars it a little bit. What do you think? Because I had negative reactions about Jacob because he held his brothers heel or something.....

Love Elsie Sofia and Delilah. Infact love all your names and all work great with Noah

sweetnosugar · 28/06/2020 17:29

Love Elsie, it’s beautiful!
Connie is nice too.

TheMandalorian · 28/06/2020 17:25

I know a 6yo Elsie. Its a lovely name. Also a Lily in the class. Plenty of Eva/ Ava/ Isabel about too.

FlowerPig · 28/06/2020 17:22

I meant to add that I am unsure on Daisy because I'm not sure I want to name my daughter after a weed (in some weeks cases/places), although I do love the name and love it with my partners surname....suppose it just depends if I care what others think/say or go with how I feel. But it's front runner for her first name or middle name.

One of my friends made a comment that it would sound daft for a woman to be called Daisy as she ages but I don't agree x

FlowerPig · 28/06/2020 17:17

I think Elsie is really cute.

My favourite from the others is Daisy, that's on my list too 🌼

Joolsin · 28/06/2020 17:14

I love Elsie. Also Daisy, Poppy and Connie.

Isabella, Amelia, Sofia and Chloe are imo, very similar-styled names that are totally different to the first group - and all very, very over-used.

Robyn is nice and I wouldn't associate it with Christmas. Lily-Rose less nice and Delilah I really don't like.

florascotia2 · 28/06/2020 17:07

OP If it matters, Elsie has shot up the popularity rankings in the past few years. It's now in the top 25 names. This graph shows the trend:

Traditionally, Elsie was a short form of Elizabeth, but it's been used as a stand-alone name for over 100 years.

midsomermurderess · 28/06/2020 16:55

I like it. And it makes me think of the Elsie Inglis Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh, named in honour of an innovate Scottish doctor and suffragist. Nothing dowdy or twee about her.

LotusClover · 28/06/2020 16:47

Sorry, I don't like it. It's far too cutesy.

PurBal · 28/06/2020 16:43

Love Elsie. I know a few and would definitely have made my list.

MaddeningtheUnhelpful · 28/06/2020 16:43

LOVE Elsie. Wanted it for DC3... alas he wouldn't have suited it...

CraazyCatLady · 28/06/2020 16:40

My baby is called Elsie, and everyone that hears it loves it. I think it's a really pretty name. It took us a while to decide, I liked similar names to you, but as soon as she was born, I knew she was an Elsie x

Sooobooored · 28/06/2020 16:38

I don’t like it at all and it doesn’t particularly go with your boys’ names.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 28/06/2020 16:37

Not keen on Elsie. Really like Connie and Chloe though.

ManualFlusherSnot · 28/06/2020 16:37

I have an Elsie, it’s such a beautiful name. Although I didn’t realise how popular it was when I named her.

daisypond · 28/06/2020 16:35

Sorry, I really dislike Elsie - it’s so frumpy and dowdy and just says “hard life of grinding poverty” to me. It gets mentioned a lot on here, which I find baffling. Eliza is better.

Isabella, Daisy, Poppy, Amelia, Connie, Chloe are fine as names. I’m not wild about Daisy, though. Connie only as short for Constance.

Robyn I dislike, and I would spell it Robin - and I would still dislike it.

Lily-Rose is a bit naff.

Delilah is a no-go. It’s like calling your DC Jezebel or Judas.

sundowners · 28/06/2020 16:34

Really like Elsie

Mammyloveswine · 28/06/2020 16:32

I love Elsie! Also love Esme, Elodie and Clara!

Thistlegirl4 · 28/06/2020 16:27

Isabella and Delilah are lovely. I really don't like Elsie at all, for me it just doesn't sound nice.

VintageGirl89 · 28/06/2020 16:25

@Roselilly36 I like Esme but dislike the different spellings and variation in pronounciations (ez-me and ez-may).

Roselilly36 · 28/06/2020 16:15

I also like Esme

Roselilly36 · 28/06/2020 16:13

Love it
