What do you think of the name Dahlia? Said 'Day-Lia' like the flower🌸

I would pronounce Dahlia as it's written Dahl-ia. Like Roald Dahl with ia!

I'd pronounce Daylia as Day-lia.

HedgeHogFoxBadger · 24/06/2020 22:43

daylia is lovely but I pronounced Dahlia as spelt. I have a Delilah

steppemum · 24/06/2020 19:15

Lots oif names have more than one pronunciation. As soon as you meet people and tell them, then they shoudl get it right.

Lost track of the number of Maya's - is it Meye - a or is it May -a
and then you have to remember which is which.

I love Dahlia (like the flower) and love flower names in general.

bluemoon2468 · 24/06/2020 19:06

I know a little Dahlia (pronounced day-lee-uh) and she is gorgeous 😍 Love it!

daisypond · 24/06/2020 19:00

Dahlia is pronounced as Daylia in British English. It doesn’t matter that it is named after Dahl.

ˈdeɪljə - in Collins Dictionary.

My Arabic friends have a daughter called Dahlia but pronounce it dah-lee-uh
I really like it

babychinoo · 24/06/2020 18:48

@june2007

Anyone who know the flower should say it properly. It,s better then choosing an alternative/made up spelling.
Okay I understand you now!

@june2007

Spell it propperly like the flower to avoid mistakes should be spelt and denounced like the flower.
Here the flower is spelt Dahlia and said Day-Lia? Confused what you mean by this as people are saying Dahlia would for them look like it should be pronounced Dar-Lia which to me makes perfect sense if I didn't know that I wanted it to be said Day-Lia
OP posts:
babychinoo · 24/06/2020 18:43

Yes I'm now thinking maybe spelling it Daylia would be more sensible as I feel the mispronunciations would annoy me. Another name I love is Flora but with the surname Ball does anyone else hear adorable when you say it out loud? Flora Ball?😅

BlusteryShowers · 24/06/2020 18:40

I would think of the murder, sorry.

florascotia2 · 24/06/2020 18:37

Re P G Wodehouse
Aunt Dahlia was indeed loud and had strong opinions, but on the whole she was a goodie, surely?
I can think of worse assocations...
But perhaps any sort of Wodehouse link won't appeal.

Dahlias and chrysanthemums both bloom in late summer/early autumn, but what other links are there? Please say, PP, am genuinely keen to know.

MamaDane · 24/06/2020 18:36

Wouldn't think to pronounce it Daylia, so if you want that pronunciation I reckon it's better to spell it that way?
Either way, I think it's a lovely name. Growing up, my Danish/Moroccan friend Adam had an older (gorgeous) sister named Dahlia (pronounced Dah-lia)

mynameisntlouise · 24/06/2020 18:33

Yeah I also think about the Black Dalia Murder. Sorry...

babychinoo · 24/06/2020 18:25

Do you think using the spelling Daylia would be acceptable to stop mispronunciations?

OP posts:
babychinoo · 24/06/2020 18:21

@MrsEricBana

I like it objectively in so far as it sounds pretty, but dahlias have chrysanthemum associations so for that reason it would be a no from me. Sorry.
Chrysanthemum associations? I've never heard of these? Please expand😂

bridgetreilly · 24/06/2020 17:32

Nope. As anyone who has read P.G. Wodehouse will agree. Aunt Dahlia is one of the aunts when "Aunt is calling Aunt like mastodons bellowing across primeval swamp."

speedstart · 24/06/2020 17:13

Black Dahlia murders for me too. Sorry

Blursula · 24/06/2020 17:12

It’s gorgeous, but likely to be pronounced Dar-lia by many I think (which I still think sounds lovely too)

FirstClassFlightHome · 24/06/2020 17:00

I know a few Dahlia's. They are all Iranian. It's a beautiful name!

Tonz · 24/06/2020 16:58

I love it. Its pretty
