Scandinavian Names

HowFastIsTooFast · 22/06/2020 21:26

Very early to be thinking of names as we're still TTC but I guess it doesn't hurt to know we're at least on the same page as each other.

DP has Scandinavian heritage and surname so I'd like to honour that at least by using the Scandi spelling of relatively common names.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Theodor
Oskar

Mathilda
Sofia
Silvia (this one has a family connection for me too)

Sadly the two boys names I've always loved are both ruled out as one is a derivative of my XH's surname and the other is DP's name!

I'm a Freya in the uk and spend a lot of time being called Frere or Fridgea and often Claire on the phone. However I do like the connections to a culture the name represents.

I did get a lot of questions about my Scandi heritage which was unfortunately non existent. My parents just liked the name.

@HowFastIsTooFast ♥️ Scandi names. Freyja, Ingrid and Eerika are all on my list although don’t think I’ll get away with Eerika, would be vetoed to Erika. Astrid, Ebba, Inge and Anneli are also lovely choices. Oskar is a good, strong name. Also like Jarle and Johan.

Get married first, it will solve lots of problems, including the surname.

Oh wow thank you! I'm squinting at my screen in the sun right now but I'll have a proper look at all those when I'm back indoors! x

If you give your child a very scandinavian name, people might assume that he/she is scandinavian, when they are only half-scandi, and might not speak the language.

I wouldn't spell a popular first name in a different way. A name like Freja spoken with a scandinavian accent sounds slightly different to Freya.
Freja will get Fredge-uh by some in the UK.

The nordic names link has some names that I know, but they may be a bit dated.

Astrid seems to be very popular.

HowFastIsTooFast · 23/06/2020 14:00

That's a great idea @giantangryrooster; I've googled it but only in English, so I'm getting British/American lists of names from that country, I hadn't thought of getting him to do it in his native language! Thanks :)

If you want inspiration ask you dp to google name lists for his country (in his language) eg we have a 50 most popular names lists.

Good luck.

HowFastIsTooFast · 23/06/2020 11:41

Thanks @SionnachGlic. That's what I would always have defaulted to but so many people have insisted that the baby would need to have my surname that it panicked me a bit.

Yes we've got loads and loads of time; we're only tossing around names now because a) we're excited! and b) I wanted to make sure we're at least on the same page. I wouldn't want to be expecting and then find out he's always harboured a desire to call his firstborn Adolf or MoonUnit or something Wink

Give baby's its father's surname & when you are married then take it as your surname...so no issue abt using ex's name. I've just noticed thst you are TTC stage...no baby has arrived yet so you have time to get married surely if that is what you both want... and also lots of time to settle on a name...

peachypetite · 23/06/2020 10:56

It makes sense. I would always advocate marriage first, like you say it doesn’t have to be a big white wedding!!

Rebelwithallthecause · 23/06/2020 10:55

I used dp surname before we were married because like you I had awful exh surname

We were always planning on marrying and if we hadn’t u would have changed my name by deedpoll instead

Don’t give your baby your exh name

HowFastIsTooFast · 23/06/2020 10:51

@peachypetite Yes I believe they are, or will be fairly soon. We're still on first cycle of TTC though so plenty of time! :)

DP has said he's happy for us to slide off to the registry office and get married with no fuss if I wanted to; he knows that I want to be with him (thus the baby-making) but am not into the idea of a big wedding after the disaster my first marriage became. Something to think about at least! Grin

That is awkward! I was just asking because my husband is also from a European country and we have made a decision to not give the baby a first name from that country too because it will have the surname, and I want my heritage to be reflected too, could be something to consider. Are registry offices operating yet?

HowFastIsTooFast · 23/06/2020 10:06

@peachypetite

Will the baby be having the Scandi surname?
The surname is a bit of an issue. I would love he/she to have DP's Scandi surname as it's lovely, but since we're not married I've had lots of advice to give baby my surname for now at least.

Problem is I still have my XH's surname and I hate my maiden name (which is why I haven't changed back). I guess I could change my name by deed-poll to match DP's? I've known others to do this when they're planning to get married eventually but not until after kids.

Annika
Laila

Astrid and Freya are brilliant names.

Other suggestions (disclaimer, I am not Scandinavian although I wish I was): Toril, Karin, Kristin for a girl.

Per is nice for a boy

Henrik.

We have a Henrik. It's a lovely name but we (and later on, he) are always having to spell it for people!!
