Thomas?

Will shorten to Tom, with the middle name Joseph, surname Alwyn. He has an older brother called Edward Charles (Ted for short) and me and DH thought Ted and Tom sound like a cool combination for brothers names. What do people think? Thanks Smile

Lovely classic name.

I’ve never met an adult Thomas who went by Thomas, it’s always Tom. They’ve all been thoroughly nice boys/men too.

Great Name. Lovely as Tom too. Go for it.

joystir59 · 22/06/2020 07:13

My Uncle Tom, short for Thomas, was a hero in WW2, decorated for outstanding bravery. He was very handsome and a lovely gentle man, so I'd say it's a great name.

JMG1234 · 22/06/2020 07:10

I have a Thomas too, though rarely call by full name as I much prefer Tom, as does he.

That's the downside as teachers mostly call him Thomas, probably serves me right for picking a long name but wanting to use the shortened version.

Thomas is lovely, and so is Tom. One of my DS's would have been Thomas if it weren't DH's name!

We have an Edward Thomas who we sometimes call Ted - sounds like we have similar taste OP!

Fantastic choices.

@daisypond

Very popular It’s not even in the top ten, so I wouldn’t say very popular.
It’s on its way down, yes, but it only dropped out of the top ten in 2017, having been very popular since the late 90s. The distribution of boys’ names is bunched quite heavily in the top 25 so the difference between Thomas at #12 and Leo at #6 was only about 500 births in 2018.

There are a lot of Thomases about and although OP’s might not have another in his class at school he’ll very likely meet a lot of Thomases through his lifetime and be one of several in the workplace.

Love Ted & Tom 😍

Pippilangstrumpfi · 21/06/2020 22:28

Very popular and a little dull imo.

POP7777777 · 21/06/2020 22:24

Yes! 👍👍

123Dancewithme · 21/06/2020 22:22

Lovely!

TildaTurnip · 21/06/2020 22:14

I too love it. I think it is a great name and in no way boring. The middle name is lovely too.

finallychangedmyusername · 21/06/2020 22:11

Great name, you can't go wrong with Thomas/Tom.

NotNowPlzz · 21/06/2020 22:10

I find it boring. Edward Ted much nicer.

Spidey66 · 21/06/2020 22:09

Love the name. It was my dad's name. Agree it's timeless and suits everyone from a baby to an old man, and fits in with all kinds of social groups.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 21/06/2020 22:09

Meh

Oxfordnono12 · 21/06/2020 22:06

Love the name Thomas, we have a Thomas Joseph. He gets TJ or Tommy.

mrs87 · 21/06/2020 22:04

Love it! The combination with the middle and surnames is lovely too.

Skybooks · 21/06/2020 21:55

Fabulous name, I have a Thomas Joseph too.

sclough · 21/06/2020 21:54

I have an 18 year old Thomas , he is Tom and has been since starting school. Thomas when he is annoying or TomTom but not Tommy 😊

ritalia · 21/06/2020 21:47

Good name. Very popular in the 50s. Now it is less popular lately.

Masc. proper name, from Greek Thomas, of Aramaic origin and said to mean "a twin" (John's gospel refers to Thomas as ho legomenos didymos "called the twin;" compare Syriac toma "twin," Arabic tau'am "twin").

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 21/06/2020 21:29

Love it but I'm biased as it's DS's middle name after my stepfather.

Love Joseph too - this is my favourite boys name but didn't use it as it's also my brothers name & I have 6 brothers so it felt unfair to use one of their names.

DramaAlpaca · 21/06/2020 21:22

Yes, really good. Go for it!

seriousandloyal · 21/06/2020 21:21

Great name
