Cherry - love or loathe?

I mentioned this name to my husband a couple of months ago when I was admiring all the cherry blossom on the trees. I think I've gone off it but he's still really keen. Sibling name is quite unusual so it's good in that sense but I'm really unsure whether or not I like it. What do others think?

I can definitely see the "popping your cherry" jokes being a huge problem. Not only that, but the name itself is quite immature and not professional sounding at all.

I know someone with the name Blossom. When I first heard it I thought it was hideous, but after getting to know her I don't even think about it anymore - in fact the name has actually grown on me a lot. So the same thing is likely to happen with Cherry. It won't necessarily give a good first impression but people will get used to it eventually.

Imissmoominmama · 22/06/2020 10:35

I think there are much nicer names 😬

captainraymondholt · 22/06/2020 10:33

I quite like the sound and idea of the name.
But I absolutely think that "pop her cherry" jokes will happen.

BabyLlamaZen · 22/06/2020 08:53

Um as a teenager that was seen as sexual Confused

So no!

WinnieWonder · 22/06/2020 08:53

I like it. But id be afraid of pop her cherry jokes

emmathedilemma · 22/06/2020 08:51

loathe

Badmemorieshouse · 22/06/2020 08:11

Love! The only Cherry I know is a beautiful psychiatrist, no not a stripper name at all!

AmazingAardvark · 22/06/2020 08:09

I like it, especially for a baby born in spring - nature-themed names are lovely. Like you, the only one I know IRL is a (slightly posh, definitely not cutesy) woman in her 70s.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 22/06/2020 07:51

It's a sweet name but the 'losing your cherry' jokes with follow the poor kid all the way through secondary school.....

grumpypreggers · 22/06/2020 07:41

Thanks for all the comments. Definitely a marmite name! The only Cherry I know IRL is a lady in her 70s so I know it's a "proper" name in that sense. I'm not too concerned about the "pop your cherry" thing as that is really an Americanism and, although it was mentioned in teen films when I was at high school no one used that expression... I think my main worry is that it sounds too cutesy. DD1 goes by her NN ending in "y" but has a full name behind it and wonder if a Cherry would feel short changed not having options.

I like it

SumAndSubstance · 21/06/2020 23:29

I know three Cherries! They are all almost exactly 60.

YourWinter · 21/06/2020 23:01

Anyone remember Cherry Gillespie, a dancer with Pan's People on TOTP in the '70s? I wanted hair like hers, and to dance like her. I've never heard of anyone else with the name but I think it could be one that would attract some teasing.

Thisismytimetoshine · 21/06/2020 22:59

Couldn't get on board with it, really. But I agree it's miles better than Plum!

Cabin · 21/06/2020 22:58

I like it as nickname for Cheryl.

Coffeeandbeans · 21/06/2020 22:53

I was going to be called Cherry but then the adverts for the drink Cherry B came out. It didn’t help that my surname started with B too. I dont have the personality to cope with endless stick so I’m grateful to my parents that they changed their minds.

Hippopotas · 21/06/2020 22:53

Love it

FixItUpChappie · 21/06/2020 22:47

Loathe personally - overly cutsie, American diner, vintage pin up.

bluerad · 21/06/2020 22:47

Not very keen, how about the French version Cerise?

GaraMedouar · 21/06/2020 22:46

I prefer Sherry / Cheri

BeMorePacific · 21/06/2020 22:43

I like Blossom. But not mad on Cherry.. or any other fruit names! xx

Dizzywizz · 21/06/2020 22:38

I like cherry and blossom. Love cassia!

POP7777777 · 21/06/2020 22:33

I know only one 'Cherry' and she's lovely! 👍

123Dancewithme · 21/06/2020 22:21

I actually quite like it!

NotNowPlzz · 21/06/2020 22:08

Cherie yes. Cherry no, and I'm all for unusual names. I think it'd be embarrassing as a teen and young adult. I wouldn't like to be called this myself, which is my way of judging if a name works or not for me.
