Using DH’s middle name as first name for upcoming DS

Is this seen as weird or perfectly acceptable? We both like this name and do think it would work. Thanks Smile

Not weird at all, go for it X

EnidsCrochetCorner · 15/06/2020 07:51

@Alice12041994 lovely name you have chosen for your son. The "family" name bit I meant is where it has even just been used once but you can still see where it came from.

Dh doesn't have a middle name. Neither does his Dad or his Grandad. My Mum is from a large family, they "ran out" of middle names by the time she was born so all her siblings have middle names and she doesn't. She always said she was too poor to have one Grin and made light of it but I could tell it irked her.

Aclh13 · 15/06/2020 01:39

It's fine any family names are traditional And sweet, I'm considering my dad's for a first name or his first name for a middle name x

@gluteustothemaximus agree with you. It’s quite a nice name too so it would seem a shame if it just didn’t get used in the family because it was previously someone’s middle name if you get me.

@EnidsCrochetCorner that’s absolutely a fair point you made - although we don’t plan on having anymore children tbh, just the one. And yes we both agree on using my grandfathers name for the middle (Francis). And DH’s middle name is Alexander, and I think Alexander Francis has a nice flow to it. I’m pretty sure DH is the only one with Alexander in his name out of the family from what I can gather, so it’s not really a “family name” as such tbh.

DS2 has same first name as DH middle name. It’s lovely. No one uses middle names anyway and when they are older and find out their Dad's middle name is their name, it's nice Smile

Alice12041994 · 15/06/2020 00:02

@MikeUniformMike grandfathers name was Francis (he went by Frank though) and then DH’s middle name is Alexander. I also think Alexander Francis flows quite nicely too.

We have done this.

Husbands grandad was called Richard
Husband is called John Richard
Our son is called Richard Ian.

(All random names used)

We chose to do this, not because it's husband's middle name, but because our son was named after both of our Grandad's with Ian being my Grandad's name.

PetraRabbit · 14/06/2020 20:47

Why not? Nice idea.

EnidsCrochetCorner · 14/06/2020 20:44

Just make sure you think through having to name any more children. It happened in my family that some children were given middle names that were clearly "family" names and then one wasn't. Can you imagine how hurt that one felt?

Is it just going to be your Dh's family name represented? What about anything for yours? Just things to think about. Not just from the outside but also the children who have been given these names.

MikeUniformMike · 14/06/2020 20:36

That's really nice, @Alice12041994. Might depend on your grandfather's name though.

Quartz2208 · 14/06/2020 20:23

DS is. Accidentally to be fair. DD who was 3.5 when he was born was absolutely adamant she wanted to name her brother a particular name. Which happened to be DH middle name and one I liked (and suits him)

Alice12041994 · 14/06/2020 20:21

@MikeUniformMike I see what you mean - I was thinking of using my late grandfathers name as the middle (haven’t suggested this to DH yet), not sure if that would be unusual or not 🤷‍♀️

I suppose a downside is that if DH is John Andrew Smith
and DS is Andrew Smith, you might want to have a say in DS's middle name - maybe your maiden name or a name you like from your side of the family.

WoWsers16 · 14/06/2020 19:35

I've taught 3 siblings who's names all connected. For example -
Eldest called AB , next was called BC and the youngest called CD . I thought it was a lovely idea x

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 14/06/2020 19:26

Both my DSs have one of their grandfather’s names as a middle name (not the same name, that would be weird). DS1 has my father’s first name as his middle name and DS2 has DH’s father’s name as his. I thought this was pretty common tbh.

2tired2bewitty · 14/06/2020 19:22

I write out wedding certificates as part of my job, and it’s very common for boys, much less so for girls.

itbemay1 · 14/06/2020 19:19

My DS first name is my DH middle name, which is also my grandads and FIL middle name too Smile

elfran · 14/06/2020 19:07

I think this is fine. It better be, because DH and I have my own middle name on the top of a list for a future daughter! Not because it's a family name (it wasn't originally, my mum chose it because she liked it), but we just really love it.

I do admit to having some weird feelings about it (would it be like letting my mum name my baby, retroactively? lol) so I'm not 100% sure we'll go for it if we're lucky enough to have a baby, but I don't think anybody else would think it was odd.

Helenluvsrob · 14/06/2020 19:03

We did. Dh middle name is after his grandpa. It is also a fine sort of name. Ds has my dads name as a middle name ( also happens to be dh dads middle name we couldn’t bring ourselves to use his 1st name 😂😱). Sisters son has a variety of dads name as a 1st name. Her husband didn’t get on with his family 😂

Alice12041994 · 14/06/2020 18:51

@MargotB7 to answer the question - pretty much as you stated below, it’s like the name has some kind of meaning to it for us if you get my meaning Smile?

OP posts:
MargotB7 · 14/06/2020 17:45

Why not give your DS his very own name?

But

If you like the middle name I think its nice to do this.

scrivette · 14/06/2020 17:40

DSS has DH's first name as his middle name, it's fine.

Alsohuman · 14/06/2020 17:37

My brother had my dad’s first name as a middle name. It was fine.

My husband is First name Middle name the 4th, his son is the 5th and his grandson the 6th. Which is strange, needless to say it would be entirely normal in the US.

Alice12041994 · 14/06/2020 17:35

@lemmathelemmin if you read the post we both like the name, so it doesn’t really matter who came up with it - although to answer your question, it was his suggestion.

I personally don’t see it as a problem using DH’s middle name, I think it’s only a problem if the first name gets passed over. But I was interested to find out how other people might perceive this if you get me?
