Alternative to Matilda

WSLTitanic1912 · 14/06/2020 09:28

Still struggling with girls names.
I absolutely loved Matilda and struggling with not being able to use now.
Please don't tell me to "just use it" because I can't. I would lose 4 friends if I used it.

What do you think I would love just as much as Matilda?

Thank You Smile

Could you use Tilly?

Lynda07 · 15/06/2020 18:56

I like Miranda, Jemima, Letitia, Fiona - if you want an 'a' at the end. I prefer all of those to Matilda actually.

I really like daisy's suggestion of Mara.

I mean, if your friends would genuinely drop you for giving your daughter the name that you love... get better friends?

DeadButDelicious · 14/06/2020 13:12

Mara is a great idea! Also like Martha.

When I think of the name Matilda I think of;

Tabitha
Ingrid
Astrid
Daphne
Lydia
Rhea
Greta
Hilda (due a come back IMO)
Ida
Frieda
Klara
Thilda (though that might be a bit close given your situation)
Theodora

I have a Matilda, never regretted it. She gets called Matilda, Tilda, Tilly and now she is older she likes to be called Mattie!

WSLTitanic1912 · 14/06/2020 12:34

@daisypond Thank you. Well worth considering.

The child actress who played Matilda is called Mara. That’s a nice name and it has some similarities to Matilda.

@daisypond I'm not really sure what I love about it. Think the film conjured up a lovely imagine of a girl name Matilda and that has always stuck with me.
Thats why I am struggling to find something equally as nice.

Beatrice, Alice, Madeline, Imogen, Evelyn, Edith are similar style/Matilda siblings I know.

There are loads of little Matildas about though, so I wouldn't worry about choosing the same name as a friend.

daisypond · 14/06/2020 10:10

Can you pin down what you like about Matilda? Three syllables? Very old English?Germanic origin?

Adelaide?
Heidi?
Ingrid?
Tamara?
Marianne?
Rosamund?
Leonie?
