Thoughts on this for a boy? I love Valentine but not that brave Blush.

Nickname would be; Tino

Valentine is gorgeous, Valentino only really works if you’re Italian IMO!

brooklyn9999 · 20/06/2020 05:20

I actually know three people named Valentin (no Valentinos sorry) but they all have spanish heritage so it kind of works for them I guess as they have a surname to match. All different ages though ranging from mid 80s to early 20s. They usually get called the full version of their name or Val, Valen.

We pronounce it as val-ehn-TEEN if that helps at all

lifestooshort123 · 19/06/2020 22:32

I was named after Valentine Dyall (a hugely popular actor in the 50s). My father desperately wanted a boy after 2 girls apparently and said how disappointed he was when I popped out. The name was tweaked to suit a girl. I'm glad I wasn't a boy - I'd have hated to be called Valentine.

summerfish · 19/06/2020 22:15

Plus he was embarrassed by his name as an adult so everyone called him Val, which I'm not sure is much less embarrassing.

summerfish · 19/06/2020 22:14

I worked with a Valentino once and he was short and fat... before I met him, I was hoping for an Italian heartthrob.

A bit like calling your daughter Willow if tall and lanky doesn't run in your family! 😂

Thisismytimetoshine · 19/06/2020 22:10

It's dreadful

Kittymitty38 · 19/06/2020 22:09

Beautiful if you are Italian x

HotSince82 · 18/06/2020 22:46

I may know of an Eden Valentine, who is a strapping teenager and loves his name.

If you like Valentino then go for it, I would assume italian heritage but I wouldn't let that bother you.

ldnstb123 · 18/06/2020 21:53

I like Valentino but only if you have Italian in your family... sounds abit silly in my opinion if you aren't Italian like names like lorenzo, Lucia etc. I feel like they are proper Italian names

I loved Valentine for my little girl but we went with Valentine as her middle name maybe try that??x

Charlottejbt · 18/06/2020 21:02

I think it's lovely. It does depend whether it goes with your surname though.

Notajogger · 17/06/2020 17:53

Only if you are Italian.
As others have said, that is a lot of name to live up to.

midsomermurderess · 17/06/2020 17:50

I would prefer Valentine. Dawn O'Porter and Chris O'Dowd called one of there sons that.

TheCanterburyWhales · 17/06/2020 09:36

It's flowery and girly even if you are Italian.
Nickname in Italy would be Vale and all the Italian boys with this name hate it.
I've only taught a handful and they're generally named after their grandfather or born on 14th Feb.

Carouselfish · 16/06/2020 18:37

I like it but only in its full length version. Met a Constantine in Amsterdam once. Thought that was lovely, but again, same issue.

Glendaruel · 16/06/2020 17:49

Not grabbing me

campion · 16/06/2020 17:41

Only if you have an Italian surname or are actually Italian. Otherwise it'll sound clunky.

Ellmau · 16/06/2020 17:35

Valentine is fab. Valentino is a bit too flowery unless you're Italian.

captainraymondholt · 15/06/2020 18:52

Valentine is less brave than Valentino for me.
But I think it's a bit like Adonis - great if they are gorgeous looking but a bit awful if they're not....

ConnellWaldronsChain · 14/06/2020 22:43

I really like it but can only imagine it on a certain type of boy (dark colouring, good looks, popular)

If your son is shy and/or a bit geeky/nerdy (meant in the nicest possible way!) then it is a difficult name to live up to!

Miljea · 14/06/2020 22:42

Sorry, I struggle with massively 'cultural' names if you are not of that culture.

It's always a grey area, where do you 'draw the line'?- but, to me, Valentine/ Valentino would be spending his summers with his grandparents in Naples. Not Cromer.

Cindie943811A · 14/06/2020 22:38

I’d prefer Valentine.
Valentino reminds me of the silent screen star who all the women of his day swooned over. Supposed to be a great lover but was actually gay.

MrMeSeeks · 14/06/2020 21:14

It’s a nope from me

PuntoEBasta · 14/06/2020 20:47

Tino the Artistic Mouse.

PetraRabbit · 14/06/2020 20:45

I'm a fan of Valentine and Valentin but not Valentino- it's just too heavily Italian, I like big strong brave names and rarely say no but I think Valentino is justa bit cheesy. Valentine is quite upper class and sort of understated in the way you pronounce it.

QueenJulian · 14/06/2020 19:46

I love it!
