Summer baby named Winter?

CherryCreme · 13/06/2020 19:38

So, just that really. I love the name Winter/Wynter (not sure which spelling) with Winnie being a NN. My baby girl is due mid August.

Are all children named April/Autumn/Summer/June born in these months or seasons? Am I setting myself up for "oh was she born in the winter"?

Am I going crazy trying to decide on a name? 😂

I don't think it matters also it's a lovely name

Whatsyourflava · 14/06/2020 20:33

Yes please do update us and good luck @CherryCreme

I love the name Winter and would use whatever month baby was born

CherryCreme · 14/06/2020 18:41

Thanks again, I was fully expecting mixed opinions to be honest!

9 weeks to go, I will update on the name and if we go for it when she's born 😬

I went to uni with a girl called Winter, she however was born in the winter.
She goes by the name Winnie now though! Which is think is lovely.

Pinkblueberry · 14/06/2020 10:24

Winter is a lovely name. And it’s always Winter somewhere in the world 🤷‍♀️

WashYourFins · 14/06/2020 10:11

She'll likely get called "Win" rather than Winnie by friends. Winnie also has all "the Pooh" implications.

Most kids round here seem to shorten names to the first syllable. Winn/Wynn as a standalone girl's name also works (means "friend", which is nice, imo.) Though there are all the implications of being called "Winn" - for the win, why are you called Win when you're a loser, etc. But kids will pick on anything really.

I don't know if "Winter is coming" is going to be an issue. Hopefully by the time she's old enough to be bothered by it, pop culture will have moved on.

It is tough because you don't know what your child will be like. All the "the pooh" and "is coming" stuff would bother me and I wouldn't want to live that name, personally, but some people would be happy shrugging all that off.

Itisbetter · 14/06/2020 09:56

Conceived in winter?

userabcname · 14/06/2020 09:54

It wouldn't bother me. I like the name Winter.

OnlyToWin · 14/06/2020 09:30

I liked Holly but felt it was not right for a summer born baby. Long term it would have made no difference whatsoever though, so I don’t really know why I let that put me off!

Natt99 · 14/06/2020 09:28

I think it's fine if you really like the name, as others have pointed out it will be winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
However, something you might not have though of - I know it's not the same but I wanted to call my cat winter because she's white, however, when I told my husband he burst out laughing and started making loads of game of thrones jokes "winter is coming" etc. Might not be an issue in a few years time as GOT has finished now but just wanted to let you know.
I think it is a lovely name with Winnie as nn though

rosy71 · 14/06/2020 09:10

I would think it strange that someone called Winter wasn't born in winter. I would also find it odd uf an April had been born in October. My middle name is May because I was born in May.

roseapothecary · 14/06/2020 09:04

I teach a summer and an autumn and have never considered whether they were born in those seasons or not. I think it's fine and winnie is a very cute nn

elfran · 14/06/2020 09:00

Oh it's absolutely fine, how many times do you meet somebody and ask when they were born? Beyond the fleeting childhood obsession with birthdays, it's just not an issue.

I went to school with a Winter (early 80s baby) and never thought anything of it. Also have no idea when she was born, and I don't think it would have occurred to me to ask.

Snowdown24 · 14/06/2020 08:26

A friend has a summer, was due September I think, and that was classed as a summer date still, but she went two weeks over due and the baby was born in autumn in October, she still called her summer and no one questions it and they have never had any negative comments about the name.

She is also such a lovely and clever girl, the name suits her perfectly!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/06/2020 08:17

I have a Summer- wouldn’t have used the name if she’d been a winter born baby though. Imo it’s a bit strange

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 14/06/2020 00:41

It’s a ridiculous name at the best of times (since it isn’t a name) and to call a summer baby it is ludicrous and opens them to a lifetime of teasing. You can do better for your child than this.

MrsAvocet · 14/06/2020 00:22

My goddaughter is called Winter and she was born in the middle of one of the hottest Summers we've had in a long time. I confess that I thought it was a bit of a strange choice initially, but it quickly just became her name and I never think about it not "matching" her season of birth now. Lots of people have names that don't make literal sense. I have 2 colleagues with names that are months and neither was born then, the India I know was born in Birmingham, Jackson's father is called David and Fletcher is a teacher, not an arrow maker. Grin
If you like it, use it. Obviously I'm biased, but I like it too.

bearfood · 14/06/2020 00:21

My dd is Autumn, born in February. We were talking about her name earlier and she said that 9/10 people she meets tell her they love her name. She is 23 and really suits it. The February birthday has never occurred to me, we just loved it and it really suits her.

BeMorePacific · 14/06/2020 00:05

I can’t imagine people finding out her name is Winter and then immediately asking what month she was born.
If you love it, go for it ♥️ Xx

CherryCreme · 13/06/2020 22:11

Thanks everyone it's actually interesting to hear all your thoughts, it's put my worries with the name to bed! And I won't be spelling it "Wynter", glad I added the variations - I think in my head it took away the season link 😂

Knowing me, I'll probably be questioning another name in a few weeks! Why is it so hard to name a baby?!

FattyIDingAsThinny · 13/06/2020 22:11

Summer born..Winter conceived? 😉

LadyGAgain · 13/06/2020 22:10

If I met Winter it wouldn't occur to me to confirm that she was/not born in Winter. It's a name. That's all!

daisypond · 13/06/2020 22:05

I think it’s fine for a Winter to be born in summer. In fact, it’s better that way than if she was born in winter - which would maybe be a bit naff. I like it as a name - spelled that way, definitely not with a Y. I would never assume April, June, etc were born in April or June either. I would assume they weren’t.

june2007 · 13/06/2020 22:04

I know someone with it as a middle name she was born late Autumn/early winter. I heard a boy called it as well but not Wynter.
