Thoughts on my name list

toastofthetown · 12/06/2020 20:09

We have been struggling to get together a list of names we both really like (truly the only boys name on the list that we are in full agreement on is Hector!). Looking for a name which is not too popular (ideally out of the top hundred) or rising quickly, but not too bizarre or ‘poncey’ sounding.

Girls:
Alice
Diana
Juliet
Marina
Vita
Boys:
August
Gideon
Hector
Patrick

I would love to hear any thoughts on other names which might appeal, especially for boys. For context, these are some of the names I like that he doesn’t:
Girls:
Polly
Valentina
Boys:
Lysander
Robin

And some names he likes that I don’t/ think are too popular:
Girls:
Holly
Lily
Boys:
Dylan
Flynn

I love Hector! Not sure about girls names...

emilybrontescorsett · 16/06/2020 11:16

I much prefer your girls names. I like Juliet and Diana best.
I think August and Gideon are awful.
The only one of your boys names I like is Patrick.

Lynda07 · 15/06/2020 19:06

I like them all except August.

userabcname · 15/06/2020 18:59

I like August and Juliet best. Alice is popular.

captainraymondholt · 15/06/2020 18:48

Girls:
Alice - I like this. It's popular. But it's classic and pretty and strong. Popular for a good reason
Diana - not sure this is due a revival yet. It's just Princess Diana to me
Juliet - I like this and much prefer this spelling to the other.
Marina - I can't bear this. It just reminds me of a harbour.
Vita - it's ok. Not really my style but it's not horrible.
Boys:
August - I like this.
Gideon - I like this
Hector - I LOVE this
Patrick - don't like this at all, feels very dull and 80s

I would love to hear any thoughts on other names which might appeal, especially for boys. For context, these are some of the names I like that he doesn’t:
Girls:
Polly - gorgeous, so refreshing after a million Holly and Mollys
Valentina - a bit fussy for me
Boys:
Lysander - don't like this, I like Shakespeare but this is ott
Robin - too girly. I can't see Robin on a boy any more

And some names he likes that I don’t/ think are too popular:
Girls:
Holly - boring
Lily - boring
Boys:
Dylan - boring
Flynn - I really like this and I don't think it's too popular. There are a lot of Finns / Fins though!

Out of all the lists I would pick Juliet or Polly and Hector or Flynn.

Other ideas:

Girls:
Eloise
Aria
Sienna

Boys:
Theodore
Laurence
Solomon

elfran · 14/06/2020 19:19

I like Vita and Diana from your girls list, and LOVE August (nn Gus is adorable!) and Hector from your boys.

Hannah9176 · 14/06/2020 16:15

I love Valentina and it was a strong contender until I told my parents and mum kept saying "Valentino" and now it's completely put me off!

merryhouse · 14/06/2020 15:09

Harriet, Jemima, Verity, Adelaide

Henry, Neil, Owen, Kevin

MikeUniformMike · 14/06/2020 14:53

Not on your list but how about Victor?

MikeUniformMike · 14/06/2020 14:53

Alice - like it a lot
Diana - Yes. Do it.
Juliet - ok. Not keen on Jools. A bit too linked with Romeo?
Marina - yes
Vita - makes me think of Ryvita

Boys:
August - no
Gideon - no
Hector - What the Hec, it's better than the previous two
Patrick - really like it

Girls:
Polly - like it a lot
Valentina - no
Boys:
Lysander - no
Robin - too many R names around at the moment

And some names he likes that I don’t/ think are too popular:
Girls:
Holly - nice but no
Lily - nice but no
Boys:
Dylan - dislike
Flynn - not keen

Kokeshi123 · 14/06/2020 13:40

Patrick for a boy--it's such a nice solid name. I am not keen on your other boy choicesGideon is Giddy, Hector is another word for nag, and I would assume an August was a girl.

For girls, Marina and Juliet are the nicest. Alice is OK. Not sure about Diana. Vita makes me imagine a breakfast bar or nutritional supplement.

IKEA888 · 13/06/2020 20:30

August is amazing

17caterpillars1mouse · 13/06/2020 20:28

Girls:
Alice - it's nice enough, a little bland

Diana - pretty but very associated with the people's princess

Juliet- nice enough, just not my style

Marina - I like it, pretty but unusual. Pretty sound

Vita - I quite like it, but prefer Marina

Boys:
August - I like it and like Auggie as a nn

Gideon - I like it. I used to know a lovely adult Gideon

Hector - it's OK, I've heard it a few times in the last few years - do you like Dexter, I think it has a similar vibe?

Patrick - love it, lovely classic name, not overly used. I know a gorgeous 4 year old Patrick

123Dancewithme · 13/06/2020 09:50

I love Marina! Hector and August are great too.

IndiaMay · 13/06/2020 09:32

You might think I'm mad but could you compromise with Dylan for a girl? I love Dylan spelt that way for a girl and I have known of a few so it's not so out there

toastofthetown · 13/06/2020 08:54

Thanks for all of your opinions and suggestions. Looks like Hector is widely liked (and no I'm not in London Smile ), the girls list more varied. I'll go through all the suggested names today with my partner.

I know how popular the name Alice is, and in all honesty would probably use another name above it due to this. I think the fact that Alice has been perennially popular helps - if it had a popularity trend like Luna, shooting up out of nowhere then that would probably bother me more. But it's a good point and something which I need to decide how I feel about.

I have a young hector and wherever we go we never meet any others with that name so it's not popular but people always love it. I'm tempted to say use it as long as ur not in London near me 😂😂

TempsPerdu · 12/06/2020 22:35

Oh and not keen on Lysander - but I do know a very lovely Leander (who goes by Leo).

TempsPerdu · 12/06/2020 22:34

Really lovely lists OP (apart from Gideon, which I must say is horrendous!) Love Vita and Alice - Vita was on our shortlist for DD and Alice is now one of her middle names (we decided it was just that bit too popular as a first name). Also like Juliet, and Holly is very pretty too.

Of your boys’ list August is the standout for me - great name.

Girls’ ideas:

Cleo
Sylvie
Greta
Etta
Miranda
Helena
Lucia
Hermione
Cora
Rosa
Gaia

Boys’ ideas:

Magnus
Torin
Stellan
Gustav
