My dd is 10 years old and we were talking about names the other day and she asked if there were other names we considered. I said your dad wanted to call you Lois, but mummy really didn't like it. She said, oh I love that name so much, I wish you had!! She said she still likes her name but not as much as what she could have been called! I thought it was quite amusing and I got a 'told you it was a good name' from DJ!

My mother named me after herself. An old fashioned 20’s name. I changed my name when I was 50, don’t know why I waited so long!

Miriel · 14/06/2020 11:48

I have a very popular 80s name. Recently I was discussing names with my mother and she said that she'd always regretted spelling my name the conventional way instead of giving me a 'cuter, girlier' creative spelling that she'd come up with.

I told her I was very, very glad she hadn't. As a woman in my 30s the last impression I want to give people is cute and girly.

I do have a 'creatively spelled' middle name, but it's not cutesy so I don't mind that.

Obviously she hasn't moved out yet!! But I was thinking more along the lines of, not a baby, young child and can form her own opinion of what she thinks of the name choices!!

@Imalauren obviously not all other people! People who pronounce it differently do exist, people on this thread know them, myself included.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/06/2020 10:07

Eilidh, Hermione & Hazel were the top 3 contenders when my parents named me. Eilidh was vetoed because, living in England, I'd have spent my life having it mispronounced & misspelt. Hermione because it was too long. Hazel because when it came down to it my Mum wasn't keen. I don't mind my name but I like the other choices too.

bridgetreilly · 13/06/2020 10:02

10 years old is not 'grown up'.

CoffeeRevelLove · 13/06/2020 07:38

I didn't think I was having a girl and hadn't decided on a girl's name. I went with what my husband liked most and I wish we'd delayed naming her. We have a surname we have to spell and she has a forename that she has to spell. We should've gone for another one that we both loved

She knows what we would've called her and likes both

I’m a Lauren and I’ve never heard anyone pronounce it Law-ren, I pronounce it to rhyme with sporran or foreign, and so do other people.

mathanxiety · 13/06/2020 04:41

I have honestly never encountered a Lauren who pronounces her name Lah-ren. All of them are Law-ren - it was a very popular name in DD1's year in school so I know quite a few.

'Sophia Law-ren'
MarshmallowsOnToast · 13/06/2020 03:55

My cousin is Lauren pronounced LAW-ren. As if you start to say Laura but instead of a at the end it's en.

instead of the normal presumed pronunciation of Lauren (Lah-ren)

Neither are said like Sophia Loren. (Le-ren).

mathanxiety · 13/06/2020 03:39

Yes, like Sophia Loren's name.

Victoria6386 · 12/06/2020 20:12

My name would have been victor if i was a boy..

babycakes1010 · 12/06/2020 20:08

I was either going to Megan Helen or Samantha which was vetoed by my grandad. Glad I wasn't a boy as my name would of been Ricky 😂

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 12/06/2020 20:00

@blosstree

I know one Lauren who goes by 'LAW-ren' as opposed to 'Lorren' (written phonetically)
To me that would sound like Sophia Loren. Is that the pronunciation you mean?
blosstree · 12/06/2020 19:43

I know one Lauren who goes by 'LAW-ren' as opposed to 'Lorren' (written phonetically)

mathanxiety · 12/06/2020 09:11

I suspect what I have written as Law-ren and 'Lorrun' are very similar in sound.

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 12/06/2020 00:24

I was nearly called Annabel (prissy but not awful), Miranda (F no!) or Donna (double F no!!!). I think I got off lightly. As a child, I would have chosen the name Jessica for myself.

My brother was nearly called Seamus but my dad said no as he didn’t want him having an Irish first name as well as an Irish surname (it was when the IRA was very active and my dad worried it would bring trouble). My brother was gutted as he would have loved to have been calmed Seamus.

MikeUniformMike · 11/06/2020 18:05

Lauren could be pronounce Laur-en or Lo-REN, but it's just Lorrun. I think it's a bit downmarket.

WindsorBlues · 11/06/2020 17:57

I was born late 80s and was Melanie for a week after I was born but DFs mum and sisters decided they didn't like, it was the worst name in the world ect ect so mum felt pressured and changed it to what it is now, I so would have preferred Melanie, especially as Sporty was my favourite Spice Girl.

Plot twist after all her moaning my aunt went on to call her own DD Melanie

mintich · 11/06/2020 17:16

I thought there was only 1 way to pronounce Lauren! I've never heard it any other way?

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/06/2020 17:11

I was given a truly awful name. (Seen it mentioned on different threads and people agreeing it is a truly horrible name)

My 2nd name is even worse.

My mother said she gave me the names because they sounded French.

Problem was my mother has a certain accent (most definitely not French) and when she shouted the name out in the street it sounded even more horrendous

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 11/06/2020 17:05

Off the back of this thread my daughter has just confessed that she made herself learn the spelling of her middle name in time for her GCSE's! In fairness it is a very "old lady" name and I don't know of anyone under the age of 80 with it.

MikeUniformMike · 11/06/2020 16:56

Lauren is just Lorrun isn't it.
It looks nicer than it sounds.

CaffiSaliMali · 11/06/2020 15:21

Never encountered the Lau in Lauren pronounced like the Lau in Laura, except from my Dad. All the Laurens I know say the Lau part like the Lau in Laurel rather than the 'law' sound you get in Laura.

I was actually called Jason for a while lol!!

I was baby number 4, with two sisters and a brother so when my mum was pregnant this time she was pretty sure I was a girl. I was early and had jaundice when I was born so they took me away straight away but the nurse told her I was a boy!! So I was called Jason, until later on another nurse came into see me and realised I was a girl! Thankfully I’m not a Jason!
