Help - Girl Name!

LASandOtto · 06/06/2020 20:29

Looking for short girl name that is easily pronounced (also in other languages, as I am from Germany, OH is English, but we have family and friends in other countries and would visit frequently). It's important to me that the name can be pronounced and written without too much room for misinterpretation.

At first we were quite set on using my grandmothers name, which is a German name - Mina. I was then however concerned it may be mis-spelt as Meena quite often? Or maybe I'm wrong, so looking for opinions!

What's your thoughts on Mina?

Also, any other suggestions for names that cannot be 'shortened' to anything, and are easily pronounced?

I do like the name Nova but think it might be a bit out there!?

All opinions and suggestions welcome and thank you all in advance! 😊

I like Mina and I would pronounce and spell it like that.
I know several who are of Indian origin and it is pronounced and spelt like that (at least two have the full name Minaxi).
I'm not as keen on Nova; it does remind me of the car.

elfran · 08/06/2020 10:18

I love Mina; it's perfect and I would spell it exactly like that if I heard it. You may get Meena occasionally but I think it would be less common than people who get it right.

Nova is nice as well (I rarely like a "modern" name but I do like Nova) however it's more popular than Mina and rising.

Mina hits the sweet spot of familiar-sounding, easily pronounced and spelt, but somehow uncommon.

Mina is lovely, stick with Mina. ☺️

Love Mina.

If I ever have another DD I’d have Benjamina NN Mina.

southerngirl28 · 07/06/2020 11:37

Mina is lovely. Not keen on Nova. What about Ramona?

CarrotCakeMuffins · 07/06/2020 09:56

My first thought was Anna from your brief.

PregnantPorcupine · 07/06/2020 09:53

I like both Mina and Nova. Also Bea as suggested by pp, and Noa.

MamaDane · 07/06/2020 09:51

Mina is lovely, stick with that. I don't think misspelling it as Meena will be as much of a problem as you think.

BruceWilllis · 07/06/2020 09:49

I know a Mina. It's lovely. She never has any problems with pronunciation or spelling.

CaffiSaliMali · 07/06/2020 09:40

Anne, Anna, Sofia, Sophie, Nina and Rosa came straight to mind.

Mina is a beautiful name. I know one (british from an Indian family) and she rarely gets Meena by mistake.

English people would probably not spell it Meena (as pp said, it's very like Nina). It's a nice name, I like it.

Nova would make me think of a car.

Mina always makes me think of meaner - sorry.

LittleRa · 06/06/2020 21:42

I had a relative called Mina, pronounced Migh-na. It was short for Jemima.

bridgetreilly · 06/06/2020 21:41

I like Mina, but if I heard it, I would assume it was spelled Meena, sorry.
