Help! We have totally different name tastes and no boy names!

We've sort of managed to pick a girls name but we have nothing, not even one short listed name, for a boy, constantly vetoing each other.

I like names like Austin, Everett or Elliot - DH is not on board. He likes names like Clancy or Trent, definitely not for me.

The only name I'm sort of warming up to at the moment is Stellan (I'm Scandi so it wouldn't be totally out there).
But we're not the type for what's typically considered traditional names like Alexander, Benjamin or Oliver. Nothing wrong with them, they're all lovely, they're just not us.

Would you have any inspiration of names I could suggest to him? Im running out of ideas and I'm sure there are loads of amazing names out there I haven't even considered or stumbled across yet.

Hmmm! Also fair point, they have similarities.
His other suggestions have been along the line of Octavius, Atlas and Ezekiel - also not for me.

For some reason we don't like each other's suggestions at all- I don't know why.
It could possibly be down to connotations of the names (like Trent reminds me of trench foot).

But it means we're back to square one with no names.

I think Jamie is lovely.

Ricekrispie22 · 06/06/2020 09:51

Can you find a name that you like but has a nickname/shortening that your DH likes, or vice versa?

For example, you might like Clifford, but your DH prefers Cliff or Ford.
Or Jason (Sonny)
Jackson (Jax)

Alternatively, Trent reminds me of Rhett, which is not dissimilar to Emmett.

Also I think the names are all similar apart from Elliot. I find Elliot fits in with the Alexander, Benjamin style names.

I really love Austin. Clancy is lovely too and really different!

PlantPotting · 06/06/2020 09:51

If you don't like Trent how about Tristan?

ReginaGeorgee · 06/06/2020 09:50

This is very much like DH and I. He tends to like completely different style names to me. We try to go through lists but he finds it hard to imagine a name on someone just from a list which I understand... it's a really tough one but the suggestion of making some lists and star rating them is good.

Also, I've noticed if I say to DH "What do you think of ....?" He usually vetoes it because it's my suggestion. If I do it together with him and find the same name, for example, he tends to consider it more and often say he likes it. That may not be helpful at all for you but it seems to help with my stubborn DH! 😂

stophuggingme · 06/06/2020 09:50

Those names are very similar

helpmum2003 · 06/06/2020 09:48

I think all those names are similar also..

bridgetreilly · 06/06/2020 09:46

I would have said the names you listed and your DH listed are exactly the same type. What do you think the difference is?

december2020 · 06/06/2020 09:44

Good suggestion and I have suggested this to DH as well! I just need a few more new names on my list I guess, as at the moment I think he'd star max one at best. 😅

I am currently building my list of 20 (think we may need the extra names to manage to star up to 3).

I think the only thing to do is both write a list of your top 10/20 names and then swap over.
You then star the top 3 you like from each others.
Then you have a narrow list and go from there. If one of you refuses to mark 3 names you like best from the others list, none of their names get chosen, if that makes sense.
