Morning all,

I really like both Elsie and Elise as girls names.
Could I please ask for your opinion, which one do you prefer as a name?

(we would pronounce Elise as EL-eese)

Thank you Smile

Elsie is very popular right now.

Elise was popular when my DD was born in 2001 but not heard of it for a long time.

Personally I'm not keen on any El names, Ella, Ellie, Eliza etc. Just all a bit over used and meh

Ellmau · 16/06/2020 17:30

Oh yes, Eloise is lovely!

Ellmau · 16/06/2020 17:30

I prefer Elise as a name, but not the way you want to pronounce it. If you want the EL sound I would stick with Elsie. Or you could try Elsa or Ellis?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 16/06/2020 08:14

I like Eloise.

BashandSparrow · 07/06/2020 10:39

Elsie

I like that it works for a baby right up until you’re an old lady.

I also like the name Eloise which seems to be the best of both worlds!

mortforya · 07/06/2020 06:20

Really don't like Elise, is it pronounced like the sports brand? Elsie is a bit boring and meh, I do love Eliza though, not that's a timeless name.

Theforest · 06/06/2020 19:14

Elise definitely.

Elsie is cute, but so many little girls called that now.

GeorginaEstonia · 06/06/2020 17:44

Ooh yes Eloise is gorgeous actually and very underused.

Carouselfish · 06/06/2020 17:26

Elsie is sweet
Elise is sleek

SoberCurious · 06/06/2020 16:52

Elizabeth rocks.

SoberCurious · 06/06/2020 16:51

I prefer Eloise to both.

Victoria6386 · 06/06/2020 16:48

Elsie

CuppaZa · 06/06/2020 16:36

Elise.
Elsie has been done to death in the last few years. I also think that as an adult, Elise sounds better.

IloveParmaViolets · 06/06/2020 16:34

Elise is classier so suitable for both child & adult and Elsie sounds childish so Elise would be my choice.

caringcarer · 06/06/2020 15:47

I prefer Elise. Not keen on Elsie. The only one I know is 88 and a moaner.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 06/06/2020 14:47

I like them both but probably lElise more. Agree about the most common pronunciation being Eh-LEES though. Piers Morgan has a daughter called Elise. Beethoven's Elise had that as a nickname derived from Elisabet I think.

JollyGiraffe12 · 06/06/2020 13:59

I prefer Elise too

Twelve8Ts · 06/06/2020 13:41

Another one here for Elise! I absolutely love it.

Do not get the chavvy thing at all. Is that even still a thing..

Elsie is slightly more bland in my opinion (no offence to anyone) x

redwoodmazza · 06/06/2020 12:18

Elise - it's beautiful.

Elsie makes me think of Elsie Tanner!!!! [Showing my age now...]

MeAgain2020 · 06/06/2020 12:01

Elise is nicer, I think.
I know so many Elsie's.... cute name, but very popular. I also always think it's a name that's cute on a little girl and nice for an older lady. In between grown up years - really depends on what the person is like.

Emmapeeler1 · 06/06/2020 11:04

Elise is lovely. Makes me think of Fuer Elise.

MrsFannyDashwood · 06/06/2020 11:02

Elise and Elsie are so different to me.

Elsie is like Mabel, Flossie, Ivy, Sadie.

Whereas to my ear Elise is chic but not stuffy.
European but not pretentious
Quite like Alice but a bit more unusual.

Then there's the Beethoven, PJ Harvey song and The Cure's dreamy Letter to Elise.....

In short I think I should have been called Elise

Foxesandcrosses · 06/06/2020 10:32

ChelseaElsieEliseElsa Grin love your post! Thank you for your opinion as someone who owns the name that's really helpful.

There are lots of positives for both names.

Disappointed that some on MN still use the term 'chavy'....thought we were better than stooping to derogatory terms Hmm

They're both lovely but have such a different feel to them. Elsie has a really old fashioned, cute vibe whereas Elise is very sleek and elegant. I prefer Elsie personally.

Mollymalone123 · 06/06/2020 03:50

Elise- as she is the kindest person I have ever met - I’m biased- but she has had a lifetime of being called Elsie by mistake 😂
