I have 1&2 year old Dds and very rarely see their names suggested on here....Dd2s name has started to appear but only once I've spotted Dd1s...!
What names wouldn't you choose and why?

Just don’t find them exciting at all. I think I must know about 10 of each

This is not a nice thread at all. No need to be so nasty about a child's name, just say you don't like it fhs!

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/06/2020 10:26

Also certain sounds seem to get very popular: Eva, Ava, Maya, Evie, Ella, Isabella/Isabel, Lily, Milly, Isla, Mia - you can easily see the sound-family connections between them and they had their Zeitgeist moment and are now very much on the way out.

Yes, it's the names that suddenly became fashionable quickly that end up overused and 'dated'.

Some names have become so popular that they feel overused, that happens in every generation. My eldest dd will be 20 this year. I really liked Olivia when she was born but got a feeling that it was getting very popular, Ava was breaking through and Sophia was absolutely everywhere in every country I visited at the time! So I chose names outside the top 100. As names such as Sophia/Sophie, Ava and Olivia have been big for at least two decades it's understandable that people find them less inspiring. Also certain sounds seem to get very popular: Eva, Ava, Maya, Evie, Ella, Isabella/Isabel, Lily, Milly, Isla, Mia - you can easily see the sound-family connections between them and they had their Zeitgeist moment and are now very much on the way out. Doesn't mean they aren't all very lovely names.

Two of them are just not my taste at all and one is the name of a weird stalker we had problems with.

OffThePlanet · 02/06/2020 22:08

I have to laugh when people say they hate anything that is made up. Then in the next breath someone else mentions what the nicknames could be from a particular name. Then someone else says they would just name them the nickname.

All names were made up once upon a time. Not everyone likes British names. Names you love will be hated by someone else. Parents really need to think about how their child would feel when their name is called and know their child will more than likely hate their name.

This is not a nice thread.

Anything with -Mai/ -Rai on the end, or any double barrelled first name to be honest.
Skylar and Aurora because I've met horrible brats with these names!
And anything with a special or made up spelling

Thesnakeminder · 02/06/2020 19:41

Jenny - horrible happiness drains
Eveline / Evelynne etc - just bluergh
Tilly / Milly / Gabby etc

VirginWestCoast · 02/06/2020 19:33

Otillie- see it on here loads but have never met one in any of the schools I've taught at. It sounds ridiculous for all ages.
Aurelia- see above
Tilly/Milly/Ellie etc- They're fine as nicknames (though I have a feeling that Tilly is short for Otillie, I can't think what else) but they seem to now be actual names. The parents apparently haven't considered that their daughter may one day not want to sound like a six year old girl.
